I was reading somewhere the other day that apparently Mario Bava said FIVE DOLLS FOR AN AUGUST MOON was the worst film he ever made.

any other directors that have gone on record to say a particular movie they made was their "worst"?

Wes Craven disowned The Hills Have Eyes Part II (1984). Craven claimed he did the movie because he was in need of money at that time. Ironically, halfway through filming the movie was put on halt because the producers ran out of money.

Not a least favorite work story, but Brian De Palma's only regret about Carrie (1976) is that he wasn't able to cast bigger names. He wanted Carrie to be a huge box office success, and De Palma thought that was only possible by casting better known actors.
Regardless of casting choices Carrie did pretty good at the box office, and Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were both nominated for the Oscar for their parts in Carrie.

yeah I heard Craven didn't like THHE 2 ... not seen that sequel. it can't be worse than the more recent non-remake sequel Hills Have Eyes 2 though. or whatever it was. that was a horribly dumb movie

DUNE was the only movie David Lynch regrets, because it was the only one he didn't have final cut on.

I really like a lot of Lynch's stuff but can't even be bothered to watch this. it even sounds wrong on paper

Kubrick hated Fear and Desire
never even heard of that one!

Spelberg did not like the theme for Jaws, or the actors playing it. He loathed Bruce (the constantly breaking down mechanical shark) and hated dealing with the people Martha's Vineyard who he felt were very snooty and did not want him making a film there.

In an interview I watched on youtube, George Romero all but disowned his second film, There's Always Vanilla.  It was his attempt at a romantic movie. :buggedout:  He said the writer did a crappy job and that the film was "a mess".  I would have to agree with him on that. :teddyr:

I never knew about that Vanilla movie until he passed away and I browsed his imdb. It seems to have a bit of a cult fanbase, even if Romero didn't like it.

strange, sure I've heard a anecdote about spielberg and williams working on the theme together, with spielberg telling williams how he wanted it to sound? either way it's one of the most perfectly matched scores ever. how  2 notes repeated can sound so menacing....

"When composer John Williams originally played the score for director Steven Spielberg, Spielberg laughed and said, "That's funny, John, really; but what did you really have in mind for the theme of Jaws (1975)?" Spielberg later stated that without Williams's score, the movie would only have been half as successful and according to Williams, it jumpstarted his career. "

I've got one of the anniversary editions of Jaws and in the various extra materials Spielberg talks about all the things he wanted to change about Jaws and how much he learned from being proven wrong on loads of elements.

cool, fair enough. I did see a documentary on youtube a while back about the  making of, and all the various problems they encountered... but obviously some films with troubled production turn out great.

Stephen Hopkins hated his South African made film The Ghost And The Darkness.

generally look up movies directed by Al Smithee and you'll find movies directors really didn't like.

I love Wes Craven and all his creation, but I would have to agree with the fact that The Hills Have Eyes 2 is not that impressive.
