If you know any absurd independent local movies worth a looksy feel free to post them here. I'll start with

Horror of the Humongous Hungry Hungan (1991)

Grainy Z-grade 16mm hot mess shot in rural Pennsylvania. The original title was The Hungan and it appears to have been filmed in the mid-80s, even though end credits say it was 1989. This is extreme local backyard kind of filmmaking, and tells the story of some teenage girl plagued by nightmares. Her dreams become deadly reality when a re-animated corpse escapes a lab and starts stalking the girl and her friends on a camping trip.
There are more than obvious A Nightmare on Elm Street influences with a healthy dose of Friday the 13th added to the mix - the killer/monster has extended claws and spits radioactive liquid.
There's a Pee-wee Herman impersonator (a pretty good one I might add) crashing a party, a hair metal band called Cry Wolf playing a gig and I spotted Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. poster hanging on a wall. For some reason there's a narration by Jack Palance that doesn't make sense which is quite hilarious. Cast are locals most likely, and most of the younger male actors sport amazing mullets that were super-trendy back in the day. Especially in back country areas.

No doubt The Hungan is awful but I can't deny it has a certain charm, in a nostalgic time capsule-ish sort of way. It's like friends, family and the whole town came together to make a movie just for fun, even though the end results are dreadful.

Troma picked it up for distribution in the early 90s and made it available for the masses.

Got no mojo for talkin' it all up today, but for twenty years now, I keep hearing this town's going nowhere but up....

Ahhh... These films can be fun, if you're in the right frame of mind.

Two names which come to mind: Bill Rebane & Don Dohler.

Dohler made an amateur film-making magazine before launching a career as a small-time filmmaker. He films usually had good special FX for no-budget features.

Rebane made The Giant Spider Invasion, and a few other, duller movies, like The Alpha Incident, on a ranch in Wisconsin.

the DEMON LOVER aka the DEVIL MASTER (1976) is about a Ted Nugent wannabe  (he was offered the role!) who uses black magic to kill his friends (?). the acting sucks, but it's cheezy fun. Made here in Michigan! I bought a VHS big box under the DEVIL MASTER moniker at the flea market!
Directed by local boy Donald G. Jackson! (HELL COMES TO FROGTOWN)

this clip cracks me up-I dunno why-so goofy...!

Demon Lover was one of my very first mail order movies on VHS. Don't remember much about the movie except that black magic killer dude's hair was beyond amazing.

When I lived in the Wilds of Rural Tennessee it turned out my only neighbor for about a mile was a tattoo shop owner who decided to make some low budget horror movies. He actually raised enough money to feature such genre stars as Reggie Bannister, the guy who plays Doctor Gangrene, Debbie Rochon, and TEXAS CHAINSAW stars John Dugan, Edwin Neal, and best of all - Gunnar Hansen in his movies.

I had a two hundred year old restored farmhouse on about fifteen acres of woods, old out buildings, ruins, boulders, and blackberry bushes. Most of the exterior and a lot of interior shots were film in and around my place. All the stars were nice, with Gunnar Hansen particularly so. We got to be buddies and I'd drive him around to the Piggy Wiggly and he'd roll around and play with my dogs. My cat Alice fell madly in love with him and managed to get herself a featured role in one of the movies.

The moves all got released on DVD by Lionsgate and practically nobody saw them. A couple of them got BIG SCREEN premieres at a local independent theater that usually played foreign films. They were all pretty terrible.

Hey, that's my old barn!

That's nice: am I right in saying that's Old Latherface in the red shirt?

That's the guy! Despite being famous for playing a crazed, idiot Texas Chainsaw murderer he was actually a very softspoken, intelligent  Icelander who wrote poetry for his girlfriend.

Next to him in that photo wearing the fake beard is Edwin Neal, who played the crazed hitchhiker brother. The guy who played their demented old grandpappy was also there, as a cop or something. So there was a mini-TEXAS CHAINSAW MURDERS family reunion right in my house.

It was in post production for a couple of years.
I get killed twice in this movie.

Look up "Thr33 days dead."

Didn't SYFY or somebody make a documentary about the filming of this one?

I grew up nearby, in Guntersville.
