I've heard a lot of interesting things about Criterion movies but have never purchased one since they're all $40 a piece. (Not counting the sale right now)
Does anyone here buy Criterion? If so then could you tell me why you like or dislike it?

we have several criterion releases, fave being carnival of souls, because it has a TON of extras about how and where the movie was made, and a short about the anniversary reunion, interviews with the actors, info about herk's company centron, a bunch of stuff!

More often then not each movie has a ton of special features, which I love. I feel that this usually makes up for how much each film costs. Typically, I use Amazon.com to buy Criterion DVDs because it is much less expensive then purchasing from their website.

I have a massive Criterion Collection DVDs, around 50ish. These range from classics,  like Rebecca and Godzilla, to osbcure films, like Following and Ministry of Fear, to films hated in their time like The Rules of the Game and Heaven's Gate and cult films like Life of Brian. There's something for everyone available through Criterion.

Spine #700 on the Criterion store. It's a great movie that I already own on a normal Blu-ray. I can just give the old disc to somebody else.

I got lucky with a few of them: I got Hamlet and Chasing Amy at Goodwill, both in fantastic condition, for a little over a buck. I got Life of Brian from BarnesandNoble.com for a shade under $5. Some of the rest I got great value from Amazon.

I got the Criterion version of Fantastic Mr. Fox in the mail today. I'm in school right now and don't get out until 9 so it'll be awhile before I can watch it.

I bought three new Criterions during Barnes & Nobele's summer sale: DEAD MAN, MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS, and FEMALE TROUBLE (John Waters. Not sure Waters will look right in hi-def, though).
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

FEMALE TROUBLE?  Wow.  If there is a masterpiece of trash it's FEMALE TROUBLE.

I don't think John Waters would look good at all in hi- def. These are low-def movies. No frills.
I'm lucky I can sit through a John Waters movie at all. I don't sit through them all- and I've seen the early ones worth seeing. Not because they're not fascinating.  I just don't see a time or place where I could sit down and watch it again.
But I don't need to see PINK FLAMINGOS twice. Once was enough. And his later ones were only interesting for the casting.

More on John Waters-
Ok. H.G. Lewis made some gory movies in the early 60's. The only one I have watched more than once was 2000 MANIACS- and that was just because of the bluegrass music.
I feel the same about John Waters. I though PINK FLAMINGOS was brillant. But I will never watch it again.
