In the 1925 Phantom movie, it's never explained. In the remake with Claude Rains he's deformed by acid.

That's interesting. Normally right wing groups prefer Classical economics as it benefits the few over the many, while Keynesian economics involves spending lots of money on lots on civil projects and wellfare projects, but normally leads to high inflation (basically its tax and spend), which in the UK at least anyway is traditionally a left wing policy.
