For the record, despite the tone of this story I remember I was happy enough when I wrote it early in 1996, so its darkness wasn't coming from my life, but 1996 did turn out to be a mixed year for me, starting on an up note after a rough 1995, having what I wanted, life calming down, high school being less a pressure cooker than other years there, everything going great, then the man I loved more or less dumped me so he could take his dumbass drug addict, f**k any hot woman he could get his  hands on father to Argentina for a liver transplant, and I remember that summer seeing this story and thinking it was almost prescient because I was in a good place when I wrote it but was mad and down and sad the next time I read it. I've lived a weird life.
