I think you can have great films either way.
Though I prefer things like 2 LANE BLACKTOP to things like TOO FAST AND TOO FURIOUS crap.
On the other hand the EXORCIST is so much better than garbage like CATHY'S CURSE , (which I still enjoy, for some masochistic reason.)
BUT! If I have to choose- low budget, hands down.
I don't need s**t blowing up every 5 seconds.

One of the dullest films I have ever tried to watch (and failed on several occasions) was the remake of Solaris. Big budget, big star, multiple famous directors, and it looks like a soft core porn film but without the porn. I do tend to find low budget easy to put on and enjoy.

I 'd rather watch GAPPA than GODZILLA 1998.

*Shudder* Thanks for reminding me about a film that not only did I not enjoy, but I paid a lot of money to watch and not enjoy.

What is low budget in today's Hollywood?

When films today can exceed $300 million in budget. The latest being 2018's Avengers : Infinity War at $316 million. Though, that does not top the cost of 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean : on Stranger Tides, which still holds the record for the costliest film to date at $378.5 million. That is for 1 film, because, if you want to count the total cost to make the Hobbit trilogy, that comes out to $623 million or about $208 million per film.

Of course, if your name is Robert Rodriguez, then in 1992, you can make a little film called El Mariachi for $7225. Even with post production costs of $200,000, with a box office of $2 million, one is looking at a film that made a tidy profit of around $1.5 million, or enough to make a 2nd film.

And none of them compare to CARNIVAL OF SOULS or the SADIST with Arch Hall jr, or NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD or the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
