So very sad. The roof already collapsed, along with a tower built in the 19th century.

A massive cultural loss, for sure. And I was planning on visiting it again next month. Glad I got the chance to experience it in my 20s. Almost 900 years is a good run for a structure.

I wonder is radical islam had anything to do with it? Even if they didn't will they be blamed for it? Will some islamic group take credit for starting the fire even if tney didn't?

This has the potential to go very, very bad. Far beyond any damage to the cathedral itself.

Well maybe this won't become a "holy war" then,  but I'm sure the far right crowd will claim it was Islamic terrorists and the government us afraid to say so.  Keep an eye on this story,  it has potential to get a lot worse.

See- that's the thing. Some folks make everything about politics.
But LIFE is not politics.  This, to me, is a loss of history. Of beauty. Of antiquity.

The altar and choir suffered the least damage, and the church's Holy Relics were rescued.

A lot of things had been removed prior to the fire as part of a renovation effort according to MSNBC. Most roof statues, some stained glass windows, relics, etc.

From what I am hearing, the main structure has been saved, although to roof is gone. One company has already pledged 100 million euro's towards repairing it.
