There's a new version of Phantom of the Opera in the works.  This movie is meant to be a psychological thriller comparable to Misery or Black Swan.  They say they really want to play up the horror aspect and downplay any romance in the movie.

It's also set in modern day London, which makes it sound like it was an idea they had left over from the failed Dark Universe.

Right now there's no director or cast attached to it but they have the writer from Bohemian Rhapsody.  They're also saying they want completely new songs and already have a number of Grammy nomiated artists working on that.

I'm not holding my breath for this one, but I am curious.

If they were doing a dark psychological thriller based on PHANTOM, I might be interested. The fact that it sounds like they're also trying to make it a musical dampens my enthusiasm greatly.

No! Please!
I can't think of any version of the PHANTOM that I liked beyond the Chaney version.
And even it isn't great. Except Lon Chaney. Not even Claude Rains' version (too much romance) and Herbert Lom ( run of the mill) could do a good Phantom.
And the Robert Englund or musical (AHH!) versions suck golf balls threw garden hoses.

Pretty sure Phantom of the Opera was one of the Dark Universe movies.

I really hope they don't set it in the modern day.  That story works best as a period piece.  It is essentially a creepy stalker story but do you really want to see the Phantom using social media and getting " Me too" ed.

At least, that's what Gary Busey told me...
