Seeing Forbidden Planet + 23

I was scanning my diary and from it estimate I have seen Forbidden Planet twenty-four times, leading me to wonder when does seeing a movie "many times" slide into seeing a movie "too many times"?

I'm not speaking of some socially-imposed limit that in violating one becomes a movie geek open to the taunts of regular people, but when does the experience of repeated viewing of a movie begin to diminish enjoyment once found in the movie itself?

With Forbidden Planet I'm not exactly there yet but most movies wear thin after a few watchings and become lessened by repetition. Sometimes even ruined. Strange phenomenon but I know it exists.

I have seen the GOOD,THE BAD, AND THE UGLY over 40 times I'm sure. I'm 59, and have watched it sometimes 3 times a year in a span of about 47 years.

I've seen An Eye For An Eye (1981) over 500 times since 1981: I lost count a few years ago but I still watch it three or four times a year. Just solid entertainment, nothing more.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was banned here for quite a few years because one (yes, one!) person complained to the censor board.

I recall the banned is South Africa tag being used to help promote the film in the UK. Nothing gets people wanting to see something more than banning it.

Last Tango In Paris was also banned here but was released in Swaziland and shown at a casino there, leading to an influx of SA visitors to that country. The Minister of the Interior threatened "serious action" against those who "would dare to cross borders to see such filth"

There are many movies that I have seen many times and continue to enjoy. I don't think I'll ever see a movie I like too many times, although sometimes I've seen one too recently to be ready to enjoy it again.

'Too many times' compared with what? I think it's whether you still truly enjoy the movie, or are just putting it on because it's a familiar piece of background noise. Or are you looking for new aspects of the movie with each watch?

Movies I've watched more than ten times:

The Man With The Golden Gun - my equal favourite Bond movie along with Casino Royale (2008)
Batman Begins - I went through a phase of watching this regularly to analyze the scriptwriting, the cinematography, the editing, etc etc
Enter The Dragon - I first saw this as a young teenager and still get a kick (no pun intended) out of it
Iron Monkey - a friend group used to put this on TV every time we got together, so we watched it a LOT. But it became familiar background noise after a while.
Disney's Alice In Wonderland - goodness, I love that movie and have seen it maybe 20+ times

"Too many times" is when an activity enters the absurd.

Seriously, who cares about other people's minutiae?  Who has time for it?    

Depends on the movie.  There are at least a few that for me are "endlessly watchable" like LAWRENCE OF ARABIA or BARRY LYNDON or DEATH IN VENICE or THE WOMEN or HANNAH AND HER SISTERS or NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD... only one of which would warrant a top 5 rating for me.  At least 2 of those are what I call "motionless".  Great soundtracks on all.

 Now I have to admit that LAST TANGO IN PARIS is another film I've been reluctant to look at (like SALO or 120 DAYS OF SODOM).

I have that on videotape.  Though I think PINOCCHIO is Disney's highest achievement, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is the one I've enjoyed the most.  The curious oysters is my favorite sequence.  That film is wonderful if inebriated, but not sick.  Whackadoo!  Psychedelic before there was such a thing.  An acid trip.

Getting back to the movie... EARL HOLLIMAN and ROBBY THE ROBOT are my favorite part.  I've seen FORBIDDEN PLANET enough times, but it remains entertaining.  Full of tropes and sexism, "studly" LESLIE NIELSEN and lovely young ANNE FRANCIS    
So many cracks could be contrived 'bout WALTER PIDGEON... who has projected Electra Complex?

I think some movies are like songs, or old Bugs Bunny cartoons. I can see them countless times and still get the original joy I had of seeing them for the first time.
