I just posted about Robinson Crusoe on Mars and how it should be a classic, and isn't. Now I think about it, what other movies deserve classic status and haven't received it?

All of the films made by South African filmmakers Jans Rautenbach, Emil Nofal, David Millin ASC and others in what I call the golden age of SA cinema where the films made challenged the government of the day. The only issue is that very few of these films were released internationally because of apartheid legislation.

2004's THE ALAMO.

Highly accurate, brilliantly cast, well-acted, and beautifully filmed - and it was one of the biggest box office flops in history.

I remember you telling me years ago that the John Wayne version (while entertaining) was highly inaccurate and this one was better.

I love that movie. Someone I knew in Austin even had a screen shot from it as a laptop background with a countdown in days, hours, minutes til its premiere.

American's Funniest Videos bonus memory: I saw a big-haired girl going for popcorn trip and wipe out in the dark when I was watching The Alamo.

It's a cult classic for sure.

Some movies that didn't earn the wide audience they deserved: THE DEATH OF STALIN, THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT, BLANCANIEVES, CALVARY.

Outland.

That is a very good movie: photographed by SA born cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt ASC 😊🐢
