John Carpenter's The Thing or The Shning weren't well received back in the day. Those are big studio releases with back then contemporary A-list actors. After some years  they became cult movies.

ok maybe my definition was a bit rigid, however I don't actually consider either of those 2 to be cult movies either.  THE SHINING is a staple of mainstream horror cinema. "heeere's johnny" is practically a meme

even a horror like EVIL DEAD is too well ingrained in public consciousness to be considered a cult film imo

Quotethe movie was cringe, corny, cheesy and "what the biscuits" is with this atrocious acting and childish corny thing of a movie???

Keep in mind that nobody cared much for The Shining and The Thing when first released. Most critics hated The Shining and ripped The Thing apart.
The Thing was a box office flop and, not that it matters, both films nominated for razzies.

Unlike for example The Exorcist (1973) which was an instant modern horror classic that connected with most critics and audience worldwide.
The Shining and The Thing had a tough start but a (fast) growing cult following thanks to home video and TV, paving their way to be recognized as horror staples.
Is it October yet?
