I don't remember the distinctions of each to rank 'em nor am I positive I've seen all of them.

I suppose I agree that the original plays it the straightest yet the victims are still assorted teenage/college friends, not two families of parents and children (which in and of itself is inherently more depressing, imho anyway). Also the original has Devon Sawa in the lead, and he automatically fails to cut it for me/made me spend the entire film praying for his speedy (yet slow/elaborate/painful) death.

Part 2 has a lot of laughably s**te dialogue - yet still enough cheerful carnage to make it memorable and enjoyable.
