The film was a huge success in South Africa and was directed by David Millin who later became both a career mentor and friend to me: he was also the first African recipient of the ASC award.

The film was based on the play THE ANT HILL and was filmed in what was then the Transvaal Province in 1963. It was released overseas in 1967 and bears a lot of plot similarities to Don Siegel's HELL IS FOR HEROES with Steve McQueen.
