If you want to upset LOTR fans, ask what the problem with Sauron getting the ring back is. It isn't like he could have put it on. 

Almost every comment I've ever made about the LOTR films has upset LOTR fans - even the positive ones! (I think TWO TOWERS is head-and-shoulders the best film of the three, even notwithstanding the prolonged final scene... whoops, there he goes again!)

Do people get upset about BURN AFTER READING hot takes? It's pretty Mid for the Coens, no...?

I think Frances McDormand is great in it, and I really enjoy Brad Pitt's performance. in fact it's the only film he's in apart from SE7EN that I rate him in.... I even enjoy Clooney here (although he plays an absolute douche so maybe that's why).

I'm enjoying not talking about BURN AFTER READING. we should not talk about it more often!

(literally just bought KALIFORNIA yesterday. no recollection of his performance or anything else in this film but I know I've seen it)

I mean - I'd say half of his performances in this century? He doesn't take himself seriously in TRUE ROMANCE (previous century), in any of the OCEANS movies (which I don't much like, but he's fun in them), in ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (not taking himself seriously yet in an Oscar-worthy fashion), INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (actually to the film's detriment, somewhat, though still not taking himself seriously).

It might be harder for me to name movies I've seen where he does take himself seriously: KALIFORNIA certainly (I think he's excellent), SE7EN which you mentioned., 12 YEARS A SLAVE (he's good).. sort of FIGHT CLUB, though that movie's a grotesque satire where he plays a nightmarish ubermensch - a "serious" film but sort of a tongue-in-cheek performance.

I don't know, we're probably coming at this from opposite perspectives. I like Brad Pitt! I have skipped some of his movies that appear "serious" that haven't interested me: JOE DEATH or whatever it's called, the racing movie that Rev didn't like....... the one where he walks across Europe. I might not have enjoyed those, so I didn't bother watching them. Oh, I thought of two I didn't like: BENJAMIN BUTTON and BABEL. Really disliked both of those. But I don't think it was because of Pitt - just painful, laborious movies.

oh thanks for the memory re-jig...I still need to watch this... I'm up and down on Tarantino, but it's the first movie of his that for whatever reason I haven't rushed to watch asap

That's a good description of Brad Pitt. Johnny Depp once had a similar profile.

I always appreciate it when beautiful people have enough self-respect and dignity to not want to trade on their looks as much as possible. I have an absolutely gorgeous 16yo veteran student in summer theatre camp this month - my teaching partner says the student looks like Jennifer Connelly, which I don't actually see yet I'll let the reference speak for itself. Last week she said she was tired of always playing the hot chick.  I wanted to say, Oh honey, we should all have that problem! But good for her - I am proud of her for wanting to be taken seriously. I said, This is why Charlize Theron puts on 40 pounds or shaves her head...
