2026 Box Office Disappointments

Several high-profile movies have significantly underperformed or outright bombed at the box office. While 2026 has seen major successes like Toy Story 5, Project Hail Mary, and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, several big-budget studio bets and franchise entries have struggled mightily:

Desert Warrior (IMDb: 4/10 RT: 26%)

The Situation: Widely cited as one of the most staggering financial disasters in modern cinema history. Backed by a hefty $150 million production budget, Rupert Wyatt's historical action epic barely scraped past $740,000 worldwide following its release, failing to capture any meaningful audience traction domestically or internationally. 

The Bride! (IMDb: 5.6/10 RT: 57%)

The Situation: Warner Bros.' monster-themed feature proved to be a complete commercial mismatch with audiences. Despite a sizable $90 million budget, it was met with total theatrical rejection, pulling in a meager global gross of around $23.9 million. 

Supergirl (IMDb: 5.9/10 RT: 52%)

The Situation: DC's latest comic book tentpole struggled to find its footing with moviegoers, stumbling out of the gate with an opening weekend performance that heavily underwhelmed relative to its massive overhead and promotional footprint.

Moana (2026) (IMDb: 5.8/10 RT: 31%)

The Situation: Disney's rapid-fire live-action adaptation hit a wall with audiences, many of whom questioned the necessity of remaking a modern animated hit so soon (especially following recent franchise installments), leading to a heavy underperformance.

The Mandalorian and Grogu (IMDb: 6.9/10 RT: 60%)

The Situation: While Star Wars remains a powerhouse, Disney's big theatrical jump for the franchise faced audience fatigue. It tracked to become one of the lowest-earning theatrical entries in the history of the Star Wars galaxy. 

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (IMDb: 7.2/10 RT: 92%)

The Situation: Sony's continuation of the horror franchise struggled to turn a profit, bringing in just over $58 million globally against a $63 million budget—falling short of the typical multi-fold threshold needed for a studio release to break even, despite relatively solid critical marks.

Does a financial flop make it a bad movie? Not always.

Some would argue that Spielberg's Disclosure Day belongs on the list, but apparently it wasn't that much of a financial flop.
