i'm writing up a review for THE MAD BUTCHER (1971) which is similar to SOYLENT GREEN (1973) in that people unknowingly eat food that is made out of people. in THE MAD BUTCHER,, people eat sausages made out of the butcher's victims.

my question is, what movies, if any,  predate THE MAD BUTCHER (1971) and have a similar theme.

thanks for the help.

The Undertaker and His Pals is earlier, and I think there might be a few more than that.  Check here for Undertaker.  Also, the IMDB might lead you to more.

Also, Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus has a scene of people eating people unaware.  Just in case that's relevant.
Cullen - Super Genius, Novelist, and all in all Great Guy.

Mofo Rising

PARENTS, my most hated movie.

FRIED GREEN TOMATOES.

CONSUMING PASSIONS sort of fits.  People eat chocolate that contains people.

SOUTH PARK, the Scott Tenerman episode.

RED DRAGON.
Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.

Did anyone make a movie out of "Sweeny Todd"?   It was about a barber who cut the throats of his clients and gave the bodies to his neighbour (wife?  I forget)  to make into meat pies to sell in her shop next door.

Yes to Sweeny Todd. The 1936 British film "Sweeny Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street" w/ Todd Slaughter as Todd and Stella Rho as Mrs. Lovett.
I had forgotten about Shakespeare's "Titus Adroniicus," but, as far as I know, any film version falls after 1971. Probably the best version is 1999's "Titus" w/ Anthony Hopkins as Titus and directed by Julie Taymor, who did Disney's "The Lion King" on Broadway.
The only other film that I know on the subject that comes near the date of 1971 is 1973's "Tenderness of Wolves." A German film on the subject of real life mass murderer Fritz Haarmann, w/ Kurt Raub as Haarmann and Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Jurgen Prochnow Something of a controversy in the German gay community as it supposedly connected homosexuality to serial killing and paedophilia.
I hope these help.

I know you asked for movies that predate the ones you mentioned, but since people are just naming similar movies, how could you forget Motel Hell?
