i missed this one in the theater...what WOULD happen if an actor playing a vampire actually WAS a vampire???

just watched the dvd...makes paying off the flat screen trinitron worth it too...willem defoe and john malkovich paying tribute to Nosferatu...and it captures that feeling and mood that you almost NEVER find in movies anymore...too bad defoe got screwed by the ahkadummy...russell crowe...puleeeez.

luckily i was able to see Nosferatu in a historic movie theater in chicago (the "music box") last october AND along with an excellent live organist playing the authentic music. what a great setting to see a masterpiece as it was intended.

shadow of the vampire...besides from being a beautifully produced dvd presentation...does a great job of catching the atmosphere of Nosferatu who's production it is loosely based upon. willem defoe is brilliant as max shreck...a man actually surrounded in mystery. shadow of the vampire takes this mythology and runs away with it into the night.

john malkovich is great as the obsessed director. and defoe does such a thorough job that you don't even see him as human...he is something else.

count orlock is a great villian...marilyn manson only wishes he could rip it off half as good as defoe carries it through...i could easily imagine defoe immersing himself into character as much as his character shreck is rumoured to have done himself.

...now i'll shut up and watch the dvd extras...

Mark - re Max Schreck surrounded in mystery - the German word equivalent to "terror" is "schreck".
