BAND OF RABBITS RAVAGE NEIGHBORHOOD FOLIAGE

(07-04) 00:36 PDT PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) --

Residents in this normally serene Palo Alto neighborhood are on the lookout for a gang of miscreants some 30 strong -- but awfully cute.

These aren't hardened criminals -- they're bunnies.

It seems a discarded pair of pet rabbits have been doing what rabbits do best, and now the duo and more than two dozen of their progeny are roaming the streets of bucolic Palo Alto, turning manicured lawns and vegetation into salad fodder.

And the problem is growing or breeding by the minute.

"Once upon a time there were just two of them," said Sandy Stadler, a superintendent of the neighborhood harried by hares.

The roving band of bunnies have overrun the area, nibbling away at pristine grass yards and kept plants.

City animal officials are trying to round up the rabbits and test them to see if they're healthy enough to be adopted to homes as pets, a move that has been tried with one rabbit already with mild success.

Andy Doty of Palo Alto took in one of the rabbits at his home, and it had an eight bunny litter the next day. He said they were cute until they started eating all his plants.
