Messed Up Movie Sound

Have any of you watched a movie on DVD or VHS and the all of the sound in it sounds like you're listening to it through a drinking glass?

The entire film has a hollow sound.  Especially a hollow rushing air sound that seems to stand out.
Voices, music...all of it.

I know it isn't just me (there's nothing wrong with my hearing) because some of my friends have noticed it as well.

It's not just on home DVD's or VHS either.
Sometimes films on cable TV will have the same effect.

It isn't my TV.....I've experienced this on friends' TV's also.

I'll watch it on TV and it'll be fine but on a rented DVD it'll sound hollow and vice versa.

What causes this effect and why?

Brother Ragnarok

There's an ep of MST3K of a movie called "Projected Man" that sounds like that.  You just stop noticing after a few minutes, as long as no one calls your attention to it later in the flick.

There are only two important things in life - monsters and hot chicks.

Rape is just cause for murdering.

Does anyone know the answer to this question?

Someone here has to!

Is it the same movie? Cheap sound I guess.  I once rented "Mission Impossible" on VHS from my video store. The entire movie, particularly all quiet parts I could hear a man narrarating the mating ritual of sea otters. Traumatized by the movie and the unwanted bonus side effects, I got a refund. Mom and pop shop liked to make copies or tape over old videotapes
