Is there anyone besides me who doesn't hate this movie?

AndyC

Have you read the book? That might shed some light on why so many people were disppointed with the movie.

Actually, yes, I've read the novel several times.  I used to own a copy of it.

I liked the movie too...haven't read the novel though.   I don't know why it gets such a bad rap either.

Dunners

probably because people who read the book were hoping for it to be like the book. I know that people wanted the soldiers in the battle armor from the books but the special effects team and producer said it couldnt be done. was way to expensive, hell I heard they went to a scifi con to apologize abotu thi s like after the film cam eout.

save the world, kill a politician or two.

I liked it for the most part but I wish it had more fighting & less of that lovey dovey boyfriend/girlfriend mush.
Seeing less of Jake Busey's teeth could've helped also.
Though it was nice to see him get a knife through the hand.

The over the top gore was great though!

Partially.  Also even as a movie, it was pretty stupid.  It was such a farce of fascism it  was comical; hard to take seriously or anyone in it seriously.  Also the marine fighting tactics were as bad as a bunch of natives surrounding King Kong or something.

That's just CYA,  They could've done it; they could've done CGI suits like they did the ships but then if you got CG suits and CG monsters, why hire a bunch of hot young stars?

I didn't think it was really intended to be taken seriously in the first place...I had fun watching it.

I could have done without some of the romance, but at least there was nudity...

I don't think it was intended to be taken seriously as political commentary, but it seemed to at least want to be taken seriously as big-budget sci-fi action entertainment.

That movie and "Wing Commander" probably set warfare tactics back two centuries

I just saw it for the first time, and I still have trouble with the "SS recruiting film" aspect of it.  It just left a bad taste in my mouth -- literally.  As I type these words, I have the "my gorge rises at it" sensation described by Shakespeare.
The uniforms of the Intellegence officers at the end, and the speculum-in-the-Bug/vagina thing at the end(What makes them all cheer?  "It's afraid!!", eg. Fear itself is a worthy goal), and the mirror-image of "All Quiet on the Western Front" thing with the High School teacher -- well, I felt I was watching Nazi porn.
I get what everyone else is saying re. don't take it seriously, but I found it seriously disturbing -- and I mean that as a visceral reaction, not that I had to think about anything.
Anyway, dug the bugs & thought the guts were cool -- just couldn't get behind the 1920's Italian politics(Citizen vs. Civilian), let alone the Heinrich Himmler call-backs.
Having said that, and because of that & not in spite of, I have to give it kudos as being eerily original.  Don't think I'll watch it again, though . . . brrr . . .

Supposedly, Verhoven copied some of the shots from TRIUMPH OF THE WILL.

There is a sequel being made for  direct to video release.  It will star Richard Burgi (The Sentinel TV series) and some other folks I never heard of.

It is being directed by Phil Tippet  the stop-motion guru. It is reportedly low budget because of this being Tippet's  directorial debut.  It has been mentioned however, that Sony is getting a sweet deal on the FX for letting Phil direct.

And you thought Trek isn't cool.

Velvet Brotha

Wow, that's great news. I can hardly wait to see the sequel. As for people putting down "Star Ship Troopers"... well, who gives a s**t?!  Everyone is entitled to like what they want. Look "Wasabi", you could easily make fun of them for their taste in music. Ever seen the latest "Outkast" video? Talk about dumbing down the population. "I'd rather listen to a monkey speed humping a cat!!!" (don't ask...)

I personally liked "Starship Troopers"and was glad that Hollywood finally decided to make a another decent Sci-Fi flick. : )

There's my two cents...
