Intelligent films that have lots of gore?

Anyone know any really gory films that make you think? I know Dawn of the Dead is a good example.  28 Days Later would be a good example but it wasn't that gory. I'm looking for something really extreme yet really intelligent at the same time.

Brother Ragnarok

The Item fits nicely into this category, I think.  It's intelligent not so much in the "heavy Romero-esque social commentary" sense, but it's funny and interesting and well-written.

Brother R

There are only two important things in life - monsters and hot chicks.
    - Rob Zombie
Rape is just cause for murdering.
    - Strapping Young Lad

Gecko Brothers

Mabey Black Hawk Down or Band of Brothers. Saving Private Ryan wouldn't be in it  because of the red stuff is in the beginning.

.  .  .  .  Cronenberg's The Fly is a "gloppola" fest, but maybe it's a little too mainstream for you.  I like others but they are not really extremely gory.

yeah, war movies are good. Reservoir Dogs is pretty good too. I'll probably check out The Item, only found it on VHS though. It the Fly the one with Jeff Goldblum? That one was cool, had some cool gross effects.

Anyone know if Shivers is any good?

"Bizarre parasites lead the inhabitants of a high-rise apartment building to go on an orgy of violence. Horror and some humor mix in director Cronenberg's breakthrough hit. "

Shivers.......shivers is a strange film.

Big horror film about "love leeches"

Check it out, but be ready for something strange.

A bald man named Savalas visited me last night in a dream.  I think it was a Telly vision.

I agree, Shivers is a very strange film. Plus the idea of large parasites burrowing into your body and living there creeps me out.

"Gangster No. 1" - starring Malcolm McDowell and Paul Bettany as older and younger versions of the same sadistic psychotic mobster. It has several drawn out torture/murders including at least one mostly shot from the viewpoint of the victim. A good, not great film, but still very underappreciated.

"Society" - the Bryan Yuzna horror/social satire about the rich being monster perying on the lower classes.

The "Lone Wolf and Cub" films are extremely bloody over the top samurai adventures based on a long running manga series, but the films have great detail of samurai and Japanese feudal culture. The tapes that were available for a long time( haven't seen the DVD version but want them) had lots of footnotes explaining details of Japanese culture that most Westerners wouldn't understand as a part of the story.

The only ones that come immediately to mind (I'm sure there are others I've forgotten) are Cemetery Man, Starship Troopers and Dog Soldiers.  If I think of any others, I'll let you know.

I've heard the Japanese gangster film Ichi the Killer contains all kinds of hideous gore.

jga

I heard Ichi the Killer was disturbing too, I've had it on my DVD wishlist for awhile. I've been wanting to get Cemetery Man but never seen a real DVD yet, except for the Spanish one on ebay.

I'll check out Society, Gangster No.1, and Lone Wolf. I think I've seen some of Lone Wolf comics mentioned in Wizard.

Taxi Driver, though most of the gore is at the end.

I realize this is kinda old, and no one's written anything in about 2 weeks, but ...

Try Stan Brakhage's abstract meditation on death and the human body "The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes" (keep in mind, that's all real autopsy footage).  Or possibly Matthew Barney's Cremaster 3 (lots of bizarre imagery here, a bit of gore, but, yes, it's impossible to see because there are only about 10 copies in existence).

If you're looking for more narrative works ... sorry, can't help you there.
