Help identifying movie

I am trying to find out the name of a movie that I saw as a kid back in the late 50's or early 60's.  The terrifying image that stayed with me all these years is of a gigantic quivering sponge-like alien that lives in a big enclosure of ammonia.  This movie scared the daylights out of me and I would like to see it again.

Anyone recognise this imagery?  Please help.

Th Crawng Eye comes to mind, although it lived in a radioactive cloud.  One of the goofier 50s flicks, but a load of fun.

Sounds like you're thinking of ENEMY FROM SPACE a.k.a. QUATERMASS 2.  The aliens live in gigantic domes with ammonia for atmosphere.  They do indeed look like a gigantic quivering sponge.  Here's a review of the movie with a couple of pics that may spark your memory.
