I'm enjoying the list by NPR music critic Tom Moon: several major agreements, and only one major disagreement---but I'm only in the D's. I thought I'd give you guys a chance to see if your favorite recordings (not just albums, but some box sets and even a few singles) made Tom's list.
Too make it extra fun, I'll even keep score. One point for each album guessed correctly (for classical recordings a bonus point if you pick the exact performance). Limit yourself to one guess per post and try to pick recordings you think are universal, not just your personal favorites---because I'll subtract one from your score for each incorrect guess!
If you have the book, please recuse yourself from competition.

No in all seriousness, I'd probably say something like "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" by Genesis or an album by the Ramones.
Burgo scores a point going for the obvious!
Circus scores a point for "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway!"
(And you have to be more specific than "an album by the Ramones"--which album? You would lose a point for picking the wrong one. If there is one, and I'm not saying whether there is or not.)
998 recordings left.

Aerosmith Toys In The Attic
PIERRE MONTEUX conducting Boston Symphony: DEBUSSY's Nocturnes

Lol. I'll go with the Hannah Montana Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, Regis. Final answer.
"Fear of the Dark" - Iron Maiden.
"For What It's Worth" Buffalo Springfield
THE BEATLES Abbey Road
Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, that MUST be on there surely!
JOE'S GARAGE - Frank Zappa
The Drifters: Up on the Roof
(http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/2705/cover_933181182009.jpg)
Led Zeppelin IV (aka RUNES aka ZOSO)
"Dancing Queen" ABBA (look, someone had to mentioned it...)
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Arlo Guthrie, Alice's Restaurant
The Who, Who's Next
Dang, you guys exploded the thread while I was away.
William Weird: -1 for the "Hannah Montana Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (is that a real album?)
Doggett: -1 for "Fear of the Dark." +0.5 for "Dancing Queen" (you would have gotten the full point for "Abba Gold," but a good choice nonetheless)
BTM: -1 for "For What It's Worth." (But you're so close I hate to take that point away).
AHD: +1 for "Abbey Road"
Circus: +1 for "Pet Sounds"
Burgo: +1 for "Joe's Garage," but -1 for "Led Zeppelin IV" (I didn't agree with Moon's choices for Led Zep albums)
Andrew: -1 for "Up on the Roof"
DCA: +1 for "Loveless"
Derf: +1 for "Sgt. Pepper," but -1 for "Alice's Restaurant" (though come to think of it, that really should have made it)
And DarkSider gets off the schnide with "Who's Next"!

Andrew: no, not "Passion" either. Another -1.
The albums selected tend to be the ones that were critically acclaimed rather than the ones that sold lots of copies (although in lots of cases they're the same thing).
The recordings are mostly original albums; very, very rarely singles; and sometimes greatest hits compilations. A few times there are even box sets, which I think is cheating a bit. Compilations turn up especially when dealing with older artists who worked in the era when singles were the big thing, not albums.
Also I'll point out that most of the guesses here have been for rock, but even though rock is the largest category there are probably only about 300-400 rock albums on the list. If it were a list of 1000 rock albums, a lot of your choices may have made it.

Every list is surely going to cause some debate. And remember that of the 1,000 recordings, even though rock is the largest category, the majority of the list is taken up by classical, jazz, folk, gospel, and world music. If it were 1000 rock recordings I'm sure that those others would have made the list. Though I still disagree with his Led Zeppelin selections. (Hint: he obviously thinks that IV is no better than the 3rd best Zeppelin recording).

Beatles - Revolver....surely.
The Police: Synchronicity
R.E.M.: Out of Time
Innervisions by Stevie Wonder.
I mentioned "Songs In The Key Of Life", but Innervisions is miles better, so that has to be on there as well.

How about Pink Floyd's "Animals"?
Midnight Oil: Diesel and Dust
R.E.M.: Automatic For the People
Bob Dylan - "Blonde On Blonde" surely...

Let me clarify that not all of my guesses are recordings I would "expect" to appear (I prefer most
AIRPLANE albums over
Pillow).

NICK DRAKE Five Leaves Left

Voltron: you missed my hint that there was no more Floyd on the list. -1
Jase: "Diesel" only got an honorable mention, and "Automatic" was not on the list. -2
AHD: Your strategy hs put you out in front ten, dropped you back quickly. "Highway" and "Plays and Sings The Blues" are +1 each. "Plastic Ono Band" and "50 Years of Swing" are -1 each. "Don't You Just Know It" is +0.5 (it appears on "This Is," a Huey Smith compilation). "Ravel's Piano Works" is +1. Gotta go guys, se you tomorrow!
I had added FRANK SINATRA September Of My Years . With a thousand possibilities, a used list might make sense... :bouncegiggle:
Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys
Planet Rock: The Album by Afrika Bambaataa and Soulsonic Force
Ace of Spades by Motorhead
The Chronic by Dr. Dre
Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A.
Sailing the Seas of Cheese by Primus
I'd imagine some of these artists and or albums should be listed on there somewhere.
Joni Mitchell - 'Blue' . be surprised if thre's no joni mitchell in that list. Blue tends to be the popular choice so I'll guess that one. (Hissing Of Summer Lawns is my favourite one though)
Joy Division: Closer
Devo: Freedom of Choice
Depeche Mode: Violater
"Rock Around The Clock"
Joni Mitchell: Court and Spark
I know I saw Abbey Road mentioned, but did anyone suggest The White Album? If not, here I go: The Beatles: The White Album.
"O Forunta" in one version or another, has GOT to have made the list. Either in the original Orff version or the Apotheosis remix. (Course, that album was pulled because they forgot to get permission to use that song, so dunno if an "illegal" album can be on the list or not.)
Still, it's a classic piece of music (if sometimes overplayed in films), and I'd be surprised if it wasn't on there.
Psycho soundtrack?
AHD: not "September of My Years." -1. But somehow I missed your earlier "Five Leaves Left," which was correct for +1. So net 0.
Happy: Yes on "Paul's Boutique," "Planet Rock,"The Chronic",and "Straight Outta Compton." " No on "Ace of Spades" and "Sailing the Seas of Cheese." Net: +2.
DCA: No on "Blue." -1.
Newt: "Court and Spark" was the one. Also, no one had named "The White Album" yet, so that's another point for a +2 total.
Jase: Not "Closer," and noi on "Freedom of Choice" and "Violator." -3. :bluesad:
Circus: +2 for "Rock Around the Clock." (Correct singles are worth 2 points). Also +1 for "Psycho (Soundtrack). +3 total.
BTM: Prepare to be surprised (I am). There's no version of "O Fortunata" on the list. I think that's a big mistake. -1.

Stevie Ray Vaughan:
"Texas Flood"
"The Sky Is Crying"
At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Ray Charles (or, Hallelujah, I Love You So by Ray Charles
Shaft- Isaac Hayes (either the song or the soundtrack.)
I'm also thinking that at some point Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons show up, but I'm just curious as to if it's one of their many singles, or if it's an album in whole.
Grease Soundtrack
Circus, somebody already got WHO's Next (great album!!)
MC5 The Big Bang! Best of the MC5. These guys are not likely to be on there if STOOGES Fun House ain't... I have all three of their albums, but this is all the best of those, plus awesome uncollected kickass singles.
There are so many recordings of these Jazz tunes, it's anybody's guess what might be the best or even how many there are, but they must be included:
DIZZY GILLESPIE "Groovin' High"
CHARLIE PARKER QUINTET "Scrapple from the Apple"
COLEMAN HAWKINS "Body And Soul"
DUKE ELLINGTON ORCHESTRA "Take The 'A' Train"
LOUIS ARMSTRONG and HIS HOT FIVE "West End Blues"

I dunno. If MC5 isn't on the list, I'd be kinda shocked, and not shocked at the same time. I don't know what the criteria is for picking the list, IE: Importance, influence, etc, or if it's just 'fun to listen to.' Either way, if it's based off influence, and Public Enemy made it (which they should've, rightly so), then MC5 certainly should be on the list.
MC5 - Kick Out The Jams :twirl:

Joy Division: Unknown Pleasures
Nirvana: Nevermind
John Lennon: Imagine
Bruce Springstein: Born in the U.S.A.
Radiohead: OK Computer
I'm a bit confused. Is this list of recordings made up of whole albums, or albums and individual songs? Others are starting to guess individual songs that have been recorded too many times to count, so I'll throw these into the mix:
Dave Brubeck, "Take 5"
George Gershwin, "Rhapsody in Blue"
Glenn Miller, "In the Mood", "Pennsylvania 6-5000"
Andre Crouch, "My Tribute"
Hank Williams, "Lovesick Blues", "I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry", "Cold, Cold Heart". Pretty much the whole Hank Williams catalog should be on here, but I'll start with these. And yes, Allhallowsday, I saw that you posted one of his albums. I wanted to, but I didn't know where to start.
and another album:
John Williams, the Star Wars soundtrack.

I believe that yes, this list does include both full albums, as well as variouls singles that have been released. However, it doesn't include just a certain song, but a song as recorded by a specific person, ie "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby rather than "White Christmas" by The Platters or Twisted Sister.

That's correct. "Recordings" includes both albums and singles. If you guess a single and it was on his list AS a single, I give +2. If you guess a single and it appears as part of a compilation, I give +0.5. If the single doesn't appear at all it's -1.

I'm SO glad that I started this thread that I'm bringing it to an end tomorrow! I'll give you guys 24 more hours, until 9 PM Eastern Standard time tomorrow, to get in your best bets. There are a couple of recordings I thought would be fairly obvious that still haven't been named.
I don't see anyone catching Circus.
Hmm well perhaps digging myself a further hole but some personal faves here (I find myself coming back to these again and again):
R.E.M.: Document (seems as though there may be no R.E.M. album on there though?)
R.E.M.: Murmur
Creedence Clearwater Revival: Green River
Rage Against the Machine: Rage Against the Machine
The Misfits: Static Age
Walk Among Us by The Misfits (I'd kinda be shocked if they made the list, and shocked if they didn't)
The C.D. Version of the First Two Records by Bikini Kill
Surfer Rosa by The Pixies
1984 by Van Halen (may have been mentioned?)
Like a Virgin by Madonna
O Brother Where Art Thou? Soundtrack
No Fences by Garth Brooks
Jase: +1 for "Murmur." -1 for "Document," "Rage Against the Machine," "Static Age" and "Green River." Net: -3.
Happy: +1 for "O Brother." -1 for "Walk Among Us," "The C.D. Version of the First Two Records," "Surfer Rosa," "Like a Virgin," and "No Fences." 1984 was already mentioned (not on the list) so I won't deduct a point. Net: -4.

Well, apparently I have very different ideas than this guy of "must hear" recordings. So let's see if I can get the low score with recordings that I feel should be on the list (which means I'm not going to resort to Mylie Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers just to get obvious misses):
Nat "King" Cole: "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)", "Mona Lisa", "Ramblin' Rose"
Lisa Loeb: Firecracker
Sting: Dream of the Blue Turtles, Nothing Like the Sun
Barry Manilow: Barry Manilow II, Tryin' to Get the Feeling
Lyle Lovett: Joshua Judges Ruth
Amy Grant: El Shaddai
John Philip Sousa: "The Star and Stripes Forever"
Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass: Whipped Cream and Other Delights
Randy Travis: Alway & Forever, Old 8 X 10
Cab Calloway: "Minnie the Moocher"
The Mills Brothers: "Paper Doll"
Bing Crosby & The Andrews Sisters: Their Complete Recordings Together
The Andrews Sisters: "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree"
Leon Redbone: Double Time
Note: Album titles are italicized; song titles are in quotation marks.
Oh oh: I cannot be on much tomorrow, so I had better make this all one shot (I was wondering how the Rev was finding the time to tabulate results - I know I am having a hard time keeping track of what has been said)
Chris de Burgh: Spanish Train
The Byrds: Mr Tambourine Man
Alice Cooper: School's Out
The Animals: House of the Rising Sun
J S Bach: The Brandenburg Concertos
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Freebird
Led Zeppelin: Kashmir
The Mamas and the Papas: California Dreamin
The Who: Tommy
Richard Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
Vivaldi: The Four Seasons
Fleetwood Mac: Fleetwood Mac
eta: Richard Wagner: Die Walkure
Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture

Hmm.. this guy is starting to lose credibility with me...
How about the Areosmyth/Run DMC version of "Walk This Way"? Has to be the first time (I know of anywhere) where a rock and rap group recorded a song together.
Rick James - Street Songs?
A couple singles/songs:
"Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano
"Der Fuehrer's Face" by Spike Jones
"Eat It" by "Weird Al" Yankovic
"My Sharona" by The Knack
Albums:
Dirt by Alice in Chains
Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me by The Cure
My Aim is True by Elvis Costello
There's a few more coming to mind but I'm off to work. :bluesad:
Exodus - Bob Marley
The Score - The Fugees
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill - Lauryn Hill
Alive - KISS
Trans Europe Express - Kraftwerk
Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
My final guesses:
The Traveling Wilburys: Volume I, Volume III
Spinal Tap: This Is Spinal Tap
Talking Heads: The Best of Talking Heads
Tom Petty: Wildflowers
And thanks for all the work you're putting into this game, Rev!
REV, that was fun, if not frustrating!
Here's to our resident attorney:
Bull: -2 for the Metallica songs. +0.5 for "Black Hole Sun" (on "Superunknown"). The Nirvana album was already picked by someone before you. Net: -1.5.
Derf:-3 for the Nat King Cole songs. -2 for the two Sting albums. -2 for the Manilow albums. -2 for the Randy Travis albums. -2 for the Andrews Sisters songs. -2 for The Traveling Wilburys. -1 each for Lisa Loeb, Amy Grant, Cab Calloway, The Mills Brothers, Bing & the Andrews Sisters, Leon Redbone, Spinal Tap, Talking Heads, Tom Petty, and Sousa (I thought that was a great outside-the-box guess!) +1 each for the Lyle Lovett and Herb Alpert albums. The more you guess, the more you lose. Net: -21. :buggedout:
Newt: Some of those are both albums and singles, but since most of the rest are singles, I assumed you always meant the single version. -1 for Chris de Berg, 1812 Overture, and "Kashmir." +0.5 for The Byrds (single appears on album of the same name). +1 for Brandenburg Concertos, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Fleetwood Mac, Die Walkure, and The Four Seasons. +2 each for "School's Out," "Freebird," "California Dreaming" and "House of the Rising Son" () "Tommy" was already guessed. I guess I was wrong about no one catching Circus. One more hour to get in your guesses. I'll be out tonight watching MNF so I won't tabulate the finals until tomorrow.
This thread was MUCH more popular than I thought it would be. It turned into quite the hassle trying to keep score and remember what had already been guessed! I'm glad to be of service to the board, though.

One more hour to get in your guesses.
I'm at a loss for guesses at this point. Can only think of a few and I DOUBT they'd be on it:
"Rappers Delight" by Sugarhill Gang
Licensed to Ill by Beastie Boys (although, I don't think they'd be on the list twice, although all their albums are good)
"Runaway Train" by Soul Asylum (I don't really think any of their albums would appear, but this was a big/popular song for a long time)
SMiLE by Brian Wilson
Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
The Wayfaring Stranger by Burl Ives
Again, Rev, thanks for your efforts here. I must say, however, that I find any list that doesn't include the Nat Cole standards or the Andrews Sisters standards highly suspect. I know it's based on opinions, and I know many would disagree with many of my choices (mostly Manilow), but some that didn't make his list are simply required listening. Ah, well, I accomplished my goal of getting the low score. Yay me!

I do gotta say, Nat King Cole should've been SOMEWHERE on that list. I'm not gonna go out and buy the Andrews Sisters compilations, but I like some of their recordings (I do have Cole somewhere in my collection, alongside my 'punk' and "Weird Al" collections).
Happy: -1 each for Sugarhill Gang, "Licensed to Ill" (Paul's Boutique was indeed the only BB album), Soul Asylum, "Smile." +1 for Burl Ives. "Sweet Baby James" was correct, but it had been named before. Net: -3.
Also a correction: AHD should get +2 points because "Raw Power" was on the list. I missed it because I looked up "Stooges" and it was listed under "Iggy and the Stooges."
So the final score was:
Newt +25.5, Circus_Circus +21, DCA +3, Jack +2, Pilgermann +1, Doggett + 0.5, Jim H. 0, Voltron 0, BTM -0.5, The Burgomaster -1, The DarkSider -1, WilliamWeird -1, Bull -1.5, Andrew -3, Allhallowsday -5, xXx_JaseSF_xXx -6, Happy Gilmore -11.5, Derf -28.
Congratulations to Newt!
Derf: Nat King Cole did make his list. The album was "The Complete After Midnight Sessions." The Andrews Sisters did not, but I can't really blame him. They were popular in their era but pretty lightweight.
I kept waiting for one of you to suggest "Kind of Blue," the top selling jazz album of all time, or any of Beethoven's symphonies, but no one ever did. That was kind of a surprise to me.
Here's his entire list for those who are interested: http://www.1000recordings.com/the-list/. You can continue the conversation about what should and shouldn't have made the list if you want.
Thanks Rev, for all your work! What do *you* think of the content of the original list? Is it worth pursuing some of the suggestions? I think I might look into some of the titles that were posted: particularly since several of the people guessing seem to have similar tastes to my own. So, for me, this thread has become a resource in itself. Definitely educational.

I like the list. Of course I have some specific disagreements, but for the most part I think he did a great job of keeping everyone happy. If I was making such a list I probably wouldn't put any pop, rap or metal on it, since I don't like even the best stuff from these genres. I would have added more classical. But every list like this is going to be controversial and he did a good job.
As far as disagreements go, I noticed that he picked 6 Beatles albums, more than any other artist (except maybe Beethoven, since he cheats by counting a box of all 9 symphonies as one recording). I would have held the Beatles to 5, or even 4. (I'd probably keep "Revolver" and ditch "Rubber Soul." I'm not crazy about "A Hard Days Night" but I think he felt he had to balance all the late albums with one early one).
I was surprised when, not only did Dave Brubeck's "Take 5" not even make the list, but he actually dissed Brubeck's chops in another album entry!
For Led Zeppelin he picked "II," which is my least favorite of the first 4 albums. (He also chose "How the West Was One," which I haven't heard).
I think Pink Floyd could have landed 2 albums instead of just one. I might have added "Wish You Were Here."
One thing about the book is that for each selection he also chose 3-5 noteworthy/similar albums to go along with it. A lot of your choices ended up as honorable mentions.

Happy: -1 each for Sugarhill Gang, "Licensed to Ill" (Paul's Boutique was indeed the only BB album), Soul Asylum, "Smile." +1 for Burl Ives. "Sweet Baby James" was correct, but it had been named before. Net: -3.
Happy Gilmore -11.5,
Eh, I have a horrible score but I had fun. Really figured that at least SMiLE would be on it.
Glad to see old Burl showed up. Love Burl Ives, but took a chance cause I figured he wouldn't be on it.

Well, you didn't need me to tell you that, Google could have told you the same thing. But it would have ruined the game to link the list and put everyone on the honor system.
