Title: What TV Shows Are you Watching?
Post by: Rev. Powell on January 25, 2022, 09:03:19 AM
Seems like we used to have a thread like this. If not, we should. What are you watching (new or old, broadcast or streaming)?

I just started Netflix's "Archive 81" last night. Horror series about a man restoring old fired-samaged videotapes from the early 90s that hide... something (occult, I assume). A dual plot, as the hero has his own issues to deal with, and we watch the older story unfold videotape by videotape. A promising start.

Resident Alien.  Based on the comic book series.   They are doing a decent job of it.  Alan Tudyk is good.  Just odd  enough.

I just finished DEXTER: NEW BLOOD which I really enjoyed - a much better send-off for Dexter than the original series gave him.

And a very twisty Showtime series called YELLOWJACKETS which was very dark and compelling!

And my wife and I are enjoying THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT.

Blinders I just started on Netflix. The other 3 are airing on tv and watch as they air.

Stranger Things starts in May so I'll resume that.

Finished "Archive 81" (good, not great), and I'm back to finishing up the entire "Seinfeld" run (I'm on Season 7), finishing the last season of "12 Monkeys," and I need to watch the final two episodes of "The Mighty Boosh."

Having finished "The Mighty Boosh," I turned to a series I've been meaning to watch for decades: 1967-1968's "The Prisoner." It combines two things I love: Swinging 60s style (lava lamps EVERYWHERE) and Kafkaesque existential parables.

I put 'V The Final Battle' on hold, until I found a good reason to resume the watching. Yes, even Jane Badler is not enough reason, at the moment, to keep watching the series.
So, I think I'm going to restart watching the season 2 of Family Guy. I don't know how far I will go through this.

Dad always talked about The Prisoner but I never saw it until 2020: it freaked me out that a series which was made the year I was born could almost predict the future so well. I think Patrick McGoohan saw the future coming and he didn't like what he saw coming  :buggedout:

Update:

I put all the others on pause, and finished up:

"Undone," Season 2 - Amazon Prime, rotoscoped time-travel drama, recommended (watch the 1st season first)
"Russian Doll" Season 2 - Netflix, Natasha Lyonne sarcastic hard-drinking NYC Jewish anti-heroine time-travel comedy, recommended (watch the 1st season first)

And I started a sci-fi drama called "Night Sky" with J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek as an old couple hiding a room in their basement that can teleport them to another planet. Only two episodes in but it's promising so far. I have an early access screener, it actually debuts on May 20, but so far I would recommend it if they don't screw it up.

So having completed "Night Sky" I would recommend it. However, I also must warn that a Facebook friend found it boring, even though he usually likes arthouse stuff. There is a lot of action in the finale, which leaves a lot of loose ends for a second season---if it gets renewed.

Also, I'm binging "Schitt's Creek" irregularly when I visit my parents. Best sitcom of recent times IMO.

Last night's mid-season finale of Better Call Saul was powerful TV but utterly horribly awfully depressing, even by the standards of a show that is almost always utterly horribly awfully depressing, as was its parent series.

Obi Wan Lenobi

It's ok. Starts a bit slow, but it picks up around the 3rd episode. Last two I watched felt a bit too much like remakes of earlier Star Wars films, but they still had a few good moments. Probably'll watch the last one tomorrow.

I finished The Rings of Power and I'm glad I watched it. It had more annoying/bad moments than good, and no great moments, but it was not without good parts to recommend it, so...I hope it gets better, and I am not regretting seeing it. The two best sections of the show were (to my surprise) those set among the proto-hobbits, and the dwarves, who were immeasurably better-presented than the dwarves in 2010s The Hobbit films. Galadriel, the elves, Numenor, the goings-on in the Southlands (aka future Mordor) all ranged from boring to bad to insulting to Tolkien. If I were to grade the series...I'd give the entire presentation about a C-. Though I will say the aspects I did not like were readily identifiable and correctable, if anyone in charge of the show should choose to do so.

I watched it with a mindset that separated it entirely from Tolkien and just saw it as "another fantasy tv show". By that standard, I thought it was ok and would rate it slightly higher, but not by a huge amount (C I guess).

I'm rewatching STARGATE SG-1, I'm not even halfway through the first season, and I already remembered why it's my favorite show of all times, and the best sci-fi series ever created.
It's absurdly good. The dialog, stories, characters, villains, and overall progression of the show, all combines perfectly into a never-ending adventure, filled with existential and moral discussions. Even the wardrobes and sceneries are marvelous. And this includes the ones that look really cheap.

It sounded like a New York accent to me. The scenario was set in Boston but a New York native could easily have attended school there. The choice was strange on Glover's part but I ended up liking it.

Finished "Cabinet of Curiosities." An excellent series, even the weaker offerings were good. I'd rank them

The Autopsy
The Viewing
The Outside
Pickman's Model
Graveyard Rats
Lot 36
The Murmuring
Dreams in the Witch House

Also sort-of watching the Netflix sitcom "Blockbuster," about the last Blockbuster store operating in the US. It's... OK. My dad likes it, so I watch it with him sometimes when I'm at his house.

Andor: something like half of it is clunky, and it can be streamlined some more. It's not as bad as Obi-Wan and Boba Fett, but not as good as Mandalorian.

Cobrai Kai is notable because it manages to roll along even with a convoluted plot. Stranger Things, however, hasn't done that for the recent season.

I saw the first two-hour episode of Dark Skies (1996), and it looks OK.

Fish and others are not very funny, and I understand why they were cancelled early on. I also couldn't continue with The Ropers, and was surprised to realize that after re-watching Cheers, I found it over-rated, especially in contrast to most episodes of Frasier.

I tried Step by Step, and I think there's something wrong with the chemistry of characters, e.g., the kids sound unnecessarily mean towards their step-parents, but it's supposed to be the source of conflict of many episodes.

After decades of watching gore, instead of becoming de-sensitized, I've become too much of a fraidy-cat. That's why I don't feel like watching shows like Cabinet and Midnight Mass, although I hear they're very good.

I did try Picard for a few episodes, and that was a nightmare because it was gory and very anti-Trek. STD is a bit better, but the storytelling and characterization are terrible.

Japanese Tales of the Macabre.

Animated Japanese horror stories. The stories are interesting, although they don't always have a traditional structure, make sense or have a resolution. Both the music over the opening and closing credits are annoying although for different reasons. The disjointed closing song is especially grating though, even if it suits the show. It reminds me a lot of the manga I used to watch in the 80s.

Oh and at the very end of the credits is a short easter egg story.

On Netflix.

I haven't watched the full series yet, but I plan on. I think it is because I want to hear all of the story at the end of the credits lol.

I liked the third one, "Hanging Balloon."

And having finished off the series, I can say the one episode I strongly recommend is "Layers of Fear." Truly freaky. It's only the third highest rated episode on IMDB, but I think it's by far the best of the lot, followed by "Hanging Balloon," followed by everything else.

I gotta say I found Picard season two almost damagingly awful.  I consoled myself with the thought that it too is set in an alternate universe from the "real" Picard.

I've read nothing but bad things about that show. I'm currently rewatching TNG and I'm afraid to tarnish those good memories with something so bleak and anti-trek like that.

When the new series of Star Trek movies came out I upset Kristi by mentioning this meant that all of the original series would now be non-canon and that everything else that followed would also be changed by it (yes, I know all about the alternate universe stuff, but I still managed to wind her up over it).

Decided to catch up on the Kids in the Hall. I'll re-watch the classic episodes later, but I'm starting with the 2010 miniseries "Death Comes to Town." First episode was not great, had a "Brain Candy" feel to it, but it is a short watch overall (only 8 episodes), so I'll give it a chance.

Last of Us is great, but it's like Walking Dead, except with better writing.

I hope they don't run it to the ground, which is what happened to the storyline of the second part of the game version. It's like Twilight, e.g., a melodrama using apocalyptica for the setting.

Willow.

Good show until Warwick Davis turns up. His acting really isn't up to par with the rest of the cast. I am getting some Lovecraftian vibes from it (hell, one of the character's family name is Hastur and he knows some strange old languages, so if he turns out to be evil I will not be surprised). Lacks the sense of fun that the movie had in spades.

I get where you're coming from and don't disagree, it lacks the soul of the original, but that said I have seen every episode so far and do kind of look forward to it. Without Dan Fielding back the show would be much less worthy of my time. Sad to think how few original cast members remain.

Personally I think the world has run out of stories, or at least original ideas for stories.

Andor is at best banal; similar can be said for Obi-Wan and Boba Fett. Meanwhile, Mandalorian is turning into an Andor.

Picard's awful; similar applies to STD.

Last of Us ended up copy-pasting the video game. It's OK if you ignore some problems with the story, but if the second season will follow the second video game, then don't bother.

The new Night Court's is dreary.

They had difficulty with Battlestar because I think the target audience was supposed to be kids and teens, but the premise of the main story arc is adult (genocide). Hence, dealing with that and then including the kid and the robot dog.

Similar problems with Mandalorian as with Galactica. They don't know if they should go back to the goofy roots of the franchise, i.e., the original trilogy, or try something like an adult political thriller, i.e., the prequels.

But goofiness has its limits, as seen in the last episode. The only thing I could remember about it was the weird presence of Jack Black. But it's as least not as bad as the political thriller episode featuring the former Imperial employees. Even kids would have fallen asleep with that.

The "Waco" docu was OK, together with the one about the female bodybuilder.

Trying COPENHAGEN COWBOY by Nicolas Winding Refn on Netflix. First episode was slow, but interesting. Girl sold to an illegal brothel as a witch because the superstitious co-owner believes she can make her pregnant. I assume some actual supernatural powers are going to manifest later. 6 episodes 1 hour each is a commitment, so something better happen!

Finished COPENHAGEN COWBOY (S. 1). I can't really recommend it generally, but if you like slow-paced, arty action movies with a supernatural component, give it a go. I kind of hate the fact that it ended on a "cliffhanger" (by Nicolas Winding Refn standards), because the prospects of Netflix paying for a second season is always a gamble. (About 2/3 of shows get a second season).

Moving on tonight to the gender-swap reboot of DEAD RINGERS on Amazon Prime.

Yep, they are infamous for only greenlighting two seasons. Anyone on Netflix who leaves loose ends after season 2 is playing with fire.

The new "Dead Ringers" isn't all that much like Cronenberg's movie, despite sharing a good number of plot points/elements. I'd say it's more of a "depraved drama."

Yeah, there are articles out there about the business model. The idea is you draw in new subscribers with new shows their interested in, then they tend to hang around even if that show gets cancelled. So more new shows > quality long-running shows for their profit margins.

The way people reacted to that series put me off, which....I shouldn't let other people influence me, but I did and often do.

It's definitely a great series and it's also definitely overrated. (Which is also true of Mad Men, an all-time favorite of mine.) On the surface The Sopranos appears to be the most overt and least subtle show ever made, but I've seen YouTube episodes that point out a lot of tiny and almost unnoticeable things go on that if you catch them do add an appreciation for how much detail went into making the series work. Incidentally, I haven't finished the whole run and bailed mid-way through season five without having  felt too motivated to get back to it since I know how things turned out.

Westworld was a disappointment, and all the praise I hear for The Wire can't make me watch it because it's too bleak and off-putting, but Breaking Bad is a masterpiece, I think, and so is Better Call Saul. In BCS there was a powerful moment when a flickering candle of all things entered the narrative in a way that was enough to make me want to bow down to the makers of the episode.

Been rewatching "Raising Hope". The fourth season is a bit annoying for the first half because they forgot what the show was about, but the second half of the season gets back on the right track...right before the show eneded.

Realizing that I should cancel Hulu. I keep it so I can watch the new episodes of "Family Guy", but this season is worse than the last two crappy seasons combined. They could replace the animation with the writing staff kissing the feet of Leftist Democrats at this point. It would make it cheaper to produce and be just as annoyingly unfunny.

I'm two episodes into the new Showtime drama THE WOMAN IN THE WALL;  a murder mystery set in Ireland, involving a group of women who survived being forced as teen mothers to work at one of the infamous Magdalene Convent laundries.  Gritty stuff, but compelling.

Finished 3 Body Problem. Good, but upset that if left so much unresolved. Have to wait for the next season for some closure.

Started Outer Range, a paranormal drama set on a Colorado ranch. Surprising ending to episode one. Promising.

I remember when this was first announced on The Site Formerly Known as Tor (now Reactor). On paper, the premise is interesting, but there were some red flags. One was how the Evil Ranchers are presented as being Evil because they seek to turn a profit. Which is pretty inane, since the only ranchers not interested in turning a profit are stupid and/or incompetent ranchers who quickly get buried in a mountain of debt. A couple of posters made some snarky cracks about this discrepancy. Not long after, articles announcing movies and streaming shows were set up as Comments Closed.

The first episode doesn't explain the cause of the feud between the neighboring ranchers, but I suspect there's a backstory that's a lot more involved than just turning a profit. Sounds to me like people on the site leapt to conclusions about the character's motivations without seeing the finished product?

The show's publicity department should be held accountable. Here's a relevant snippet from the show synopsis included in the announcement:

"They are pushed further to the brink when the Tillersons (the gaudy owners of the neighboring profit-driven ranch) make a play for their land."

The adjectives in the parenthetical phrase aren't strictly required, with the disapproving tone (what with them being the rivals of the protagonist clan) implying that those traits make them intrinsically Bad People who are violating the natural order. Of course, you might read that sentence and come off with a different impression.

found the first 3 seasons of HOME IMPROVEMENT on dvd cheap... not watched this since it went out. holds up well imo, the writing is pretty sharp and the cast is clearly all having great fun.... watching it from today's perspective it seems very 'hetero-normative'(?).  not sure the focus on stereotypically male/macho values would fly today, even though it is gently parodying that as well as kind of celebrating it.

the scary thing is Tim Allen was only about 36 or 37 in season 1... all their 3 kids in the show are now in their 40s in real life (the actors I mean)  :buggedout:

Similar in tone to Rentaghost. The cast is slightly more recognisable with people like Freddy Jones (Krull) and Peter Sallis (Last of the Summer Wine). I wouldn't suggest looking it out though (as much as I enjoyed it) as I suspect without the nostalgia factor it'd fall a bit flat nowadays.

cool... but yeah I will not be rushing to check it.

THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN : SERIES 4

I find this nowhere near as entertaining as THE BIONIC WOMAN, even though the premise is basically the same. Lindsay Wagner brought a warmth and humour to her role as Jamie Sommers... Lee Majors is a bit dry and distant as Steve Austin. A bit of a meathead.

Still, I'm enjoying it ... I'm a sucker for US 70s tv series like this. the plots are silly. the special effects, not that special. but it's all so innocent and fun, and not trying to be ultra cool and edgy like most newer tv series.

anyway I am still trudging through series 5 of SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN.

the episode I watched yesterday involved Steve Austin using his bionic skills to lift ...drumroll... a chair, and move it about 1 meter.

It's probably a more accurate view of what real humans would do if granted superpowers than almost any other superhero series I've ever seen.  Homelander remains one of the greatest villains of all time!  And yes, it's also a pretty biting social and political satire.

Going to start FUTURAMA again from the beginning. I don't remember what season I would have to start with if I wanted to just watch unseen episodes. It's a fantastic series; Groening seemed to take some lessons from the decline of "The Simpsons" about in not piling on TOO many characters, in-jokes, and pop culture cameos. The cancellations probably perversely helped the show not get too overexposed, and it's always been able to pick up right where it left off.

This week I watched a French crime drama on Netflix called BLACK BUTTERFLIES.
Fascinating story of a struggling writer who agrees to ghost-write the memoirs of an old man named Albert Desiderio, now slowly dying of liver disease. Albert turns out to have been a prolific serial killer in France during the 70's and 80's, along with his wife, Solange. The writer gets sucked into the story of Solange and Albert in more ways than one as the narrative progresses, and despite his loathing of what they have done, he finds himself compelled to listen to the story to the very end.
Brilliantly done, with considerable gore and nudity, but a compelling story as well. 4/5

lately I've been alternating between episodes of the following most days

MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE '88

MURDER SHE WROTE Season 6

CHiPS Season 1

THE SIMPSONS Season 10

Season 10 of SIMPSONS is obviously past the 'classic' era but it still has it, couple of jokes per episode usually make me genuinely laugh out loud (or 'LOL' as no one seems to say anymore)

this line from Marge had me howling..

Over the past several days I've been watching "Icons Unleashed: Marvel" on Tubi.
It's an eight hour VICE-TV docu-series that details the often bumpy road that led Marvel Comics' cast of characters off the printed page and onto the screen, starting out with low budget cartoons and TV movies in the 70s and '80s, eventually bringing us to the current box office crushing Marvel Cinematic Universe we have today. Lots of cool behind the scenes clips, nerd trivia, and interviews with Marvel movers and shakers.

Also on Tubi is Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger's Corman's The Fantastic Four. There's a heartwarming moment at the end where Joseph Culp talks about how, once bootleg copies of the movie started circulating, his son was in awe of his definitive portrayal of Dr. Doom. And getting that sort of respect from your teenage offspring is worth far more than any residuals.

Little House on the Prairie

Only the pilot movie is set on the prairie; the rest are on plumb creek. Going by Wikipedia, the series only adapts the general concept of the books, not the plots.

It's good, even if it is corny melodramatic stuff.
