I went with Progressive Metal (Dream Theater, Fates Warning, Anubis Gate, Opeth, Atheist, Cynic etc.), Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Anvil etc.), Thrash Metal (Slayer, Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Invocator, etc.) Power Metal (Helloween, Symphony-X, Vicious Rumors, Iced Earth), and Death Metal (Death, Carcass, Obituary, Bolt Thrower, Suffocation etc.)... I wish I'd been able to include Rap Metal (Rage Against the Machine, Clawfinger) and Doom Metal (Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell, Count Raven, Paradise Lost), too.

I wish I could've voted for speed metal also. A truly under-appreciated sub-genre that was only really decent during the 80s. So many awesome albums and phenomenal bands: Agent Steel, Liege Lord, Savage Grace, Riot, Helstar, Angel Dust and even early Warlock...

You might enjoy Pelican - they're instrumental/sludge/post rock (kinda hard to classify).

Oh and can I just say how awesome christian metal is? It's a massive guilty pleasure of mine, and even though I completely disagree with the subject matter and message - nearly all of it (80s bands) kicks ass!
