That was my point too, AHD.  I would consider all contemporary vocal music built around a verse-chorus structure as loosely comprising different flavors of "pop" music.  When someone says their taste runs from, say, metal to country, I don't consider that very broad, though most people out there would.  I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but it surprises me a little that some people don't have much of a conception of how wide the musical sea really is:

So...what I have in what I mistakenly thought was a fairly eclectic collection is a whole lot of 'pop', a sampling of 'classical', a modicum of 'jazz' and a slightly larger portion of pipe bands?

I take it we are looking at this from a modern perspective: weren't jazz and classical the 'pop' of their respective heydays?

(ETA: Hang on:  pipe bands/marches would probably come under 'pop' too - or classical. How disappointing!)

It can be from any perspective you want. I think when I started the thread, it was mainly about kinds of music at extreme ends of the spectrum (however you define it) in the same collection. Stuff that many people would consider incompatible. Like I have Motley Crue and Barry Manilow in the same collection. I would say pop and bagpipes are not usually found together, although I can think of a few rock tunes that actually use the pipes. Steve Earle's Copperhead Road and It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock and Roll) by AC/DC immediately spring to mind.
