The diversity that some see in their own tastes is myopic; it's all Pop, whatever it likes to call itself.

That was my point too, AHD.  I would consider all contemporary vocal music built around a verse-chorus structure as loosely comprising different flavors of "pop" music.  When someone says their taste runs from, say, metal to country, I don't consider that very broad, though most people out there would.  I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but it surprises me a little that some people don't have much of a conception of how wide the musical sea really is:

Here's another "Ipod" shuffle from me:

Black Angels - "Better Off Alone"  Pretty mainstream sound.

Richard Horowitz & Sussan Deyhim - "Whorl on the Mount of Moon" Not on youtube.  Sort of a melodic classical/electronica/new age blend with wordless vocals and tape manipulations.

J. S. Bach - Cantata "Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben," BWV 147 (1/4)

Tom Waits - "Please Wake Me Up" (yes, I would define this as "pop," just very experimental pop)

Fred Anderson Quartet - "Bombay" (Children of Cambodia)" Not on youtube.  A 10+ minute, groove based free-jazz cut.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

I did the iPod shuffle thing and here're the first 20:

Steve Kilbey - Double Exposure
Schlippenbach Quartet - Glen Feshie
Magma - Ork Alarm
Bruce Cockburn - Strange Waters (live)
Klaatu - Sub-Rosa Subway
Collective Soul - No More, No Less
Link Wray - Commanche
Klaus Doldinger & Girogio Moroder - Atreyu's Quest (from Neverending Story)
Mississippi John Hurt - Candy Man Blues
Leadbelly - John Hardy
Radiohead - India Rubber
David Gilmour - Echoes (Live at the Royal Albert Hall)
Squarepusher - Massif (Stay Strong)
Popol Vuh - Singet, Denn Gesang Vertreibt Die Wolfe
Dennis Wilson - Love Remember Me
Smashing Pumpkins - Thirty-Three
Joy Division - A Means to an End
The Residents & Renaldo and the Loaf - Woman's Weapon
Howling Bells - How Long
Tangerine Dream - Movements of a Visionary

I think there's some good variety there but it's still mostly pop; even the strangeness of the Residents comes from love and hatred of popular music.  Just for fun I'll toss in a YouTube clip of track 21:

Supertramp - Poor Boy

Allow me to shock and awe you: you can't get much more extreme than these bands.

We were talking about musical extremes, not "extreme music".  But I do like the Tom Waits mixed in there.

So...what I have in what I mistakenly thought was a fairly eclectic collection is a whole lot of 'pop', a sampling of 'classical', a modicum of 'jazz' and a slightly larger portion of pipe bands?

I take it we are looking at this from a modern perspective: weren't jazz and classical the 'pop' of their respective heydays?

(ETA: Hang on:  pipe bands/marches would probably come under 'pop' too - or classical. How disappointing!)

Meh, Pig Destroyer are scene-money sell outs. You should check out Lymphatic Phlegm and Hellnation.

Pig Destroyer sellouts? I thought Prowler In The Yard was decent, but to me, nothing can top AnB's Honky Reduction as far as crazy-as-s**t grind goes.

It can be from any perspective you want. I think when I started the thread, it was mainly about kinds of music at extreme ends of the spectrum (however you define it) in the same collection. Stuff that many people would consider incompatible. Like I have Motley Crue and Barry Manilow in the same collection. I would say pop and bagpipes are not usually found together, although I can think of a few rock tunes that actually use the pipes. Steve Earle's Copperhead Road and It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock and Roll) by AC/DC immediately spring to mind.
