Jump Scares You Like or Thought Were Effective

You know how these work.  Scary movie, some guy walking around in a dark area, baddy shows up suddenly, music level jumps high, instant jump share for the audience.  It's a classic and over used movie cliche for horror, thriller, action, and almost any type of movie if you want to shock the audience.

However, jump scares, while over used, can be good and even enjoyable.  If the movie, tv show, or similiar, uses it at the right moment when the audience isn't expecting it to happen or the film doesn't rely on it too much, then it can be a good thing or gives to the movie for its effecive use of it.

So, what are your favorite jump scares in a movie, tv show, game, or whatever other medium there is; that you liked or thought was effective for the piece.  Of course, there may be spoilers here, so you've been warned.

My all time favorite jump scare came from The Thing From Another World.  There was only one in the film and it was so good.  It was the first appearance of the monster where you could see its face and torso, and not in shadows or from behind.  Worked really well for me.  If you've seen the movie, you know what it is.

For another example, but from a different genre, is Higurashi: When They Cry.  It's a manga/comic that is the only series to ever make my heart jump or scare me suddenly with a simple, but horrific image.  In a twisted and, pardon my language, f****d world the story exists in, the shocks only work even better.

Here's a personal favorite that made me swear out loud:

We live in quite an interesting age. You can tell someone's sexual orientation and level of education from just their interests.

^ I jumped a mile the first time I saw the diving scene in Jaws.

Recently Harry Potter, The Half Blood Prince got me during the end part when they get attacked by the zombies.

I saw Resident Evil in the theater and had a lot of jumps.  Not necessarily due to the visionary cues but rather the audio.  Then again, the volume in that theater was beyond loud.

I do agree the scene in Halloween is effective.

Not really a horror movie but the scene in The Dark Knight where the fake batman's body hits the window practically sent me into the theater ceiling. Its not really as good when watching at home though.

Jack

Alien - when the face hugger jumps out of the egg towards the beginning of the movie.  All time classic   :teddyr:

Exorcist: The Beginning - when the two kids are fighting over something near a well, and suddenly a hyena jumps out of nowhere and nearly tears one kid apart.

Quarantine - at the end when they're looking into the attic I believe.  They see that creature up there - yikes!

The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.

Slumber Party Massacre has quite a few jump scares in it (including the beyond classic "cat in the closet scare"). My fave is the one where the guy swings a machete killing...a snail!

Jaws got mentioned a few times and while the head in the ship scene gives me a jump everytime... I'm also am always jolted by the scene in which the Orca is sinking and the shark explodes through the side of it

bob

even though it's already been mentioned, I'll have to say Jaws
