Several local groups tried to organize huge counter protests and make a media circus out of it - but it was a lovely Sunday morning in early spring so nobody was terribly interested.

I admit out of morbid curiosity I went downtown that morning to get a load of of the infamous protesters and their goofy signs. The police far outnumbered any protesters or counter protesters. The officers were not particularly on edge: they were for the most part standing around and talking and laughing with the few passersby. The biggest crowd was the kiddies wanting to pet the police horses.

I think the response they got (other than a few odd glances from tourists and locals what amounted to a collective shrug) was far more effective than any big counter protest (i.e. MEDIA ATTENTION), which is exactly what they want. According to the news they actually shut down their protest a few hours early because of the lack of interest.

As Raffine posted above, paying little attention to them caused them to cancel their attempted protest early.  They want you to counterprotest and pay attention to them.   I'm not sure why people are so easily goaded into giving them the only thing they're seeking---attention.

There's a theory floating around that the Westboro people are actually scam artists. The theory is that the church has no political or religious point of view, they are simply using inflammatory rhetoric to bait somebody into violating their rights, at which point they sue for profit.
