Another great with tremendous strength and charisma that rivalled Hogan and the Rock in his era - and who sure was entertaining in a fight and certainly appealed to many ethnic fans....

I like The Rock a lot. Was tempted to throw him in there.

If I did 15-20, he would be.

Sammartino I don't know much of, other than his announcing stint. Never saw many matches.

Sammartino was a great brawler, one of the very best and his had some great cage match/grudge match wars with a number of opponents (George Steele, Stan Hansen, Larry Zbyszko, Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Killer Kowalksi). Usually Bruno would try and have a clean match but the villain would use dastardly techniques against him leading to an eventual showdown in which Bruno let loose and gave the villain a taste of his own medicine. He was WWWF Champion for over 11 years altogether.

Like Rock and Bruno, it was more about having that "it" factor than in-ring skills but Hulk Hogan had  "it" in spades. While he wasn't my favourite personally (I often cheered his opponents), he never failed to get me interested in watching him and his matches and he rarely failed to entertain his massive fanbase of Hulkamaniacs.

I was a huge fan of this grappler in the late 90s. Man did he ever work hard night after night.

I do like how it became a running theme of him just driving different vehicles into the arena.  Like, a lot of people have one or two cars, maybe 3 if they got teens.  Stone Cold doesn't have a Toyota or a station wagon, he's got a Zamboni, a Cement Truck, a Monster Truck, A Beer Truck. :bouncegiggle:

I love this clip.  In The Rise and Fall of ECW, Jericho tells a short story about some events in ECW.  There was a time when Jericho held the TV title, and Paul Heyman waited so long to get hold of Jericho that Jericho threatened to quit and send the title back, due to lack of direct flights from Winnipeg to Philadelphia.  Paul Heyman eventually contacted him at 5AM and said that there were to bereavement tickets waiting for him.  Paul waited so long that he lied to the airlines and said that Chris Benoit died, and Jericho needed to get to Philly immediately. 

This is the tail end of the clip, and Jericho mentions that Heyman once got Ron Simmons a ticket under the name of Seymour Goldstein, and Ron Simmons goes "Give me something to work with, here.  Do I look Jewish to you? Damn!"

It was the unpredictability that I loved about a lot of 90s wrestling when the attitude era really got going and WWF let guys do their own thing with their characters moreso...honestly it's probably what lead to WWF winning the war with WCW if you think about it. That said, the next one on my list I'm sure most would rank far higher (obviously Happy certainly did) and I considered moving him further up the list but he just seems to fit best with the guys I've been naming recently so...

A lot of folks seem to have forgotten how popular this grappler truly was in his heyday when he was WWWF/WWF Champion from 1978-1983...fans to used to pack in MSG to see Backlund defend his championship against a host and wide variety of challengers and Backlund could carry almost anyone to a great match...Many years later, he'd reinvent himself later in his career as Mr. Bob Backlund and actually managed to get in another brief heel run as WWF champion.

This man was extremely popular wherever he went and he could pretty much do it all, talk, brawl, wrestle, dance the dance and walk the walk. He might not have looked like much but boy did he ever catch on with fans wherever he went be it in the South or in the North. He had more charisma than most. In the 70s and early 80s, few were bigger attractions. Later in his career and after years of being the competition's booker in the NWA, Rhodes moved to WWF and they stuck him with a ridiculous polka dot dancing gimmick but he even managed to make that work and get over.

I only really know Backlund from his appearances in the '90s/early '00s.

No probs Happy. Actually I have a tag teams list too I could add later as well as one for factions. Anyways Backlund was great and I think I was always surprised by his power lifting up huge guys over his head routinely as if it were nothing night after night. Backlund always felt somewhat legit to me and is the first World Champ I recall from early childhood. The next guy if this was a greatest list instead of based on personal preference would perhaps be the top of the list, or very near it, as one of the greatest in-ring performers in history...

Another great ring general, a class act and fantastic champion in every way...he always seemed to be the smartest wrestling champion of them all to me. Most often managed by Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, it was always such a great fit with Bockwinkel as Champ.
