This year at the Melbourne International Film Festival they are screening a few Giallo films and I need some advice as to which one [or more] to see as I'd like to check out at least one.

I haven't seen any of these so are there any stand outs amongst the pack?

Incidentally there's a ton of other films playing which I'm excited about so feel free to add other films not on the Giallo list that are playing that I should check out while you're at it as I bought a mini pass so I have plenty of spare tickets to spare on other gems.

Deep Red and Don't torture a duckling are essential Giallo films. So if you see any of them I'd put those two as the ones you should see the most.

Deep Red
I concur, don't miss a chance to see this. Tenebrae s another good Argento , but not as good.

THE PYJAMA GIRL CASE was a bit boring imo.

Not seen HOUSE WITH THE LAUGHING WINDOWS but my Giallo friend says its good.

I didn't enjoy this one (I thought it was too slow moving.) But I've always dug TORSO, but then again, I'm not much of a giallo fan.

TORSO is pretty good.

But yeah the main problem that gialli have is being too slow moving. The ones that aren't are generally worth watching IMO

Deep Red is the penultimate Giallo. Not to be missed. Don't Torture A Duckling is by far, according to me, Fulci's finest hour. Tenebre is quite good, but not quite as good as Deep Red, but a still enjoyable watch. House With Laughing Windows is a little bit of a different feel as far as Gialli go. Some of the film almost has a gothic undertone to it. Oh yeah, it's also f**king AWESOME! I haven't seen the other two, but I'm always up for obscure Italian terror flicks. Should be a fun event. Wish my local theatre would show cool movies like these instead of mainstream big budget slop.  :bluesad:

The Burgomaster

I love DEEP RED and TENEBRAE.

"Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me either. Just pretty much leave me the hell alone."

The Burgomaster

Looks like these are cut versions . . . especially DEEP RED.  I have both on DVD and my copy of DEEP RED runs 126 minutes.  My copy of TENEBRAE runs 101 minutes.

I'm not super crazy about giallo films myself, but Suspiria is far and away the best IMO.
I liked Bay of Blood.
Blue Eyes Of The Broken Doll has its followers, and some decent scenes.  Pretty indefensibly loopy, though.
Torso had a slow first half but really picked up steam in the second.
Some gialli that have garnered quite a bit of acclaim:
Black Belly of the Tarantula
Lizard in a Woman's Skin
The Case of the Scorpion's Tail
Cat o' Nine Tails
The Bird With The Crystal Plumage
"O the legend they say, on a Valentine's Day, is a curse that'll live on and on.."

I'm thinking Deep Red and maybe one other at this stage [Deep Red fits in with my already busy schedule]

In other news in about three hours I'm going to go see Goblin play live some of their classics from Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead.  Good times for all!
