recent "horror"

Over the past month I have been catching up on films that have only been out over the past few year with the hope that at least one would be any good, but no. None of them. The ones that I have watched are:

Evil Dead (remake)
NOES (remake)
Dark Skies
Mama
Sinister
The Conjuring

either they start off good and really tail off towards the end or are just really bad from the get go.

Can someone recommend a good one? PLEASE

I also watched Hostel 3 and thought that was ok. I will give Jug Face a go. I'm quite looking forward to it.

I actually think horror is at a relative high point recently. Less emphasis on remakes, less slasher films (think back to the days of Scream and all the sub par slashers we got in its wake), and pretty much 0 torture porn. And to top it all off some of the strongest recent examples (Sinister, The Conjuring) are hitting 1# at the box office bringing more interest and focus to the genre which IMO is a great thing for everyone involved. It sounds like maybe you're just disillusioned with the genre in general maybe take some time off and then come back to it later.

agree with OP. in my view 70s/80s horror is still where it's at, both in the 'serious' sense and the 'so bad it's good' sense... never see any horrors I enjoy these days, they're all so lacking in creativity and atmosphere. Just watched the Maniac remake, another complete dud. Other recent crud-fests include Inbred, Creep Van and the truly dire "Silent House"

I rather enjoyed Mama.

You seem to be going for mainstream theatrical releases and not liking any of them, which suggests you just don't enjoy that type of film in general. I would check out some more independent fare. The last few years have been chock full of some good ones (of which indy seems to have a preternatural ability to ferret out).

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

I'd also suggest venturing into foreign films. Spain and South Korea have been putting out high quality releases for the last decade or so. Also, France has released some fairly extreme material for some reason. You can try Martyrs (2008), but I'm not sure I'd say that was "good."

ANOES and Evil Dead weren't bad.

I hated Mama and I haven't seen the other two.

I honestly do not think I'm "disillusioned" more disappointed. Zombie 1 hit the nail on the nail on the head.

I saw The Conjuring the other day. It was OK. Nothing spectacular and (like all hype) it didn't live up to it's promises IMHO. I actually didn't mind Silent House at all. I dug the "continuous one shot" dealy because it was my first encounter with that style of filmmaking, but at the same time it's not the type of movie I'd like in my collection (even though what I most enjoyed was the main girls boobs)  . That's what I think in general of new horror films - practically none of the movies released within the past decade (I'm being generous here) are good enough to warrant me buying them. They just don't seem inspired enough to have that rewatchability factor. What is it about the good ol' 70s and 80s films that make them so great? I dunno....good old school horror of those eras just oooozes with atmosphere. I guess I just really love the old grainy look and feel of them. Modern horror cinematography seems too sterile and polished for my liking.

Yep, totally agree. There just seems to be a lot of things popping out to scare you rather than atmosphere, suspense and story. Again just opinion.

While I haven't seen the films the OP listed, I do understand the basic feelings toward recent films. In my case, it includes horror and non-horror films.

It's like everyone has a "Great Idea" for a movie setup, but they have NOTHING beyond that. I gave up on trying to keep up with current films a few years ago because this.

Well, that and..."Magic Mike"? THIS is what people want?

Bring on Captain Trips; the herd needs thinning.

But I will say that "A Cabin In The Woods" was rather fun for a recent horror film.
