I'm just reading some reviews of Pet Cemetary 2 on imdb and a few people are saying it has so little to do with the original that it might as well be its own movie. I haven't seen it so I can't vouch for that personally but it got me thinking: what other sequels could be stand alone movies in their own right? (Good or bad, they all count. Had to pick a board so may as well be this one)

I can guess what everyone's already thinking so Ill get it out of the way: Halloween 3

Any others?

I saw THE ROAD WARRIOR about five years before I saw MAD MAX, & it wasn't until I rewatched TRW before I realized it was a sequel...

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN

both were movies that needed no backstory!

I think that both Aliens and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 are better movies than their predecessors. You enjoy either without having seen the "prequel".

The Dark Knight (2008). The magnificent performance by Heath Ledger quickly makes you forget how boring that the first movie, Batman Begins (2005), and the third movie, The Dark Knight Rises (2012), really were.
First rule is, 'The laws of Germany'
Second rule is, 'Be nice to mommy'
Third rule is, 'Don't talk to commies'
Fourth rule is, 'Eat kosher salamis'

I'm trying to remember if JAWS 3 makes any reference to the first two, or shares any characters? don't think it does but it's been a while since I saw it

There's actually a Troll 3 but I've never seen it. It sounds like a standalone film to me.

Silent Night, Deadly Night 4 and 5 could each be their own stand-alone flicks...

Hamlet 2

Lawnmower Man 2

Rappin' - it's supposed to be the third 'Breakin' movie, but is not really related in any way...

Xtro 2
Any of Whispering Corridors' sequels (Memento Mori, The Wishing Stairs, etc.)
Creepshow 3
War of the Gargantuas
Hell, Toxic Avenger 2 and 3 pretty much qualify.  I mean, how did he go from Melvin Ferd to Melvin Junko?  Who the hell is Claire, and what has she done with Sara?
