I read something sad in National Geographic yesterday. In 1990 there were a billion monarch butterflies, and today there are fifty million. A 95% reduction in twenty-five years?

I keep hearing the same thing about bees.
Last week, I was looking for a Buddeja Davidii Butterfly Bush at Lowe's, & mentioned to the clerk that I was looking for something to attract ladybugs. He told me the population was at an all time low last year.

Meanwhile, silkworms/inchworms were at an all time high the last two springs.

I bought several bags of Liatris bulbs back in the spring, & only a few survived, I only one partially bloomed. So far, a bee might visit it once in a while.
I did this when I kept killing my baby mimosa trees with too much sunlight, but I moved them to the shade & they're coming back with a vengeance.
When I was at Lowe's last week, the clerk talked me into a Little Lemon Goldenrod & a First Love Speedwell, and I just ordered some Tickseed Coreopsis lanceolata, some I'm hoping to get some pretty looking, and environmentally beneficial varmints in my yard eventually.

I am astounded at the level of nastiness in reactions to yesterday's announcement that the Boy Scouts of America is removing its ban on gay leaders.  I've seen some ugly stuff on the 'net, but some of these people have achieved new heights in bigotry and vitriol.  It is not that there are people who are upset, it is that those people are so darn UGLY about it whilst purporting to be upstanding pillars of society.    They are so worked up and so blinded by their fears that what they write comes off as the ravings of delusional persons of far below average intelligence.  I imagine it's a blessing they are not able to see that it does not reflect well on them at all.  They're nothing less than shrill.  Just a measure of how very scared they are, I suppose.  I thought this sort of thing was only in fiction!
