Yes-this is a FRIDAY the 13th rip off-but-it's so much better! Why-you may ask?
1. this came out before Jason was involved in the series-you know who the creep is-though you don't see his hideous mug until towards the end.
2.The campers are not all Ken and Barbie types-they are likeable and interesting.
2.NUDITY!!! Lotsa titties!  :twirl:
3.Lotsa Tom Savani gore too-but not at night-this s**t happens in sparkling sunshine!
4.You get to see Jason Alexander with hair.
5.The killer is named Cropsy!
6.And the Raft Massacre scene is the s**t!!!

Haven't seen that one in years, but it is indeed a classic horror film!

I remember it being not particularly good-- but of course, the gore is plentiful and very impressive!

Yeah, the raft scene is definitely the highlight of the film:
! No longer available
Funny to see Fisher Stevens (from Short Circuit 1 and 2) get his fingers snipped off!
Holly Hunter and Jason Alexander's debuts.
Cropsy is an old campfire tale from like the 50s or 60s.  This and a few other movies were based on that legend.

I have heard nothing about Cropsey being based on a real guy.  How long ago was he supposed to have been around?  Everywhere I've looked he's regarded as just an urban legend.

So the Crops(e)y we're familiar with does not seem to be based on a real person, according to this website.  Or at least, that Cropsey on the site doesn't seem to have any outstanding count of victims.

Cropsy was a real person-a child killer. Andre Rand.

I have heard the "Cropsey" legend actually goes older than the 70s.
Hmm..
Dunno for sure anymore.  Not on the top of my list to hunt down all the facts.
One of these days I'll have a kid and name it Cropsey.  It'll get picked on at school and then kill its tormentors later in life.  Cool!

Decent 80s slasher but I really don't remember much about it other than Jason Alexander talking about porn mags and yes, the absolutely classic finger chopping. I don't think it really belongs in the bad movie section though.

I gotta wonder-- what the hell is that thing Cropsy lops off just before he stabs the kid's neck in the raft massacre scene?  I've watched numerous times and I have no idea.  Was it supposed to be an oar handle?  If so, even for a slasher movie that's insanely stupid. :)
