When this series first ran on CBS it was a big deal, being respected as intelligent, creative, funny, endearing, sort of like Twin Peaks with a human soul and more substance, but I notice something happened and this show that seemed a shoe-in for classic status vanished from collective consciousness, and rumors of a revival haven't gotten much publicity. On lists of noteworthy 1990s TV, Northern Exposure doesn't seem to get much recognition, even as series that were less popular in their day, and less lauded for their uniqueness, are held up as landmarks in broadcast history. Posterity is a fickle goddess.

It hasn't been syndicated because the music rights were impossible to get, and the same issue plagued the home video releases. I'd love to see it again personally.

Is that right? I know that killed Cold Case in syndication too.

The Alaskan radio station used to play a ton of different music from all sorts of different genres, which they licensed for a short time. They tried releasing the series on DVD without the original music and people hated it; then they released it with the original music intact but it cost so much no one bought it; then they gave up.

I used to watch this one and really liked it.  It was fun and quirky and the brunette chick carbonated my hormones!

There were plans to make a sequel titled Southern Exposure about a guy from South Africa who walks around minus undies: don't know what happened to it.

Perhaps Shout Factory could be put on the case. After all, they managed a most satisfactory home video release of WKRP in Cincinnati.

I heard something about that.

"Northern Exposure" was hot some years ago... I didn't watch much TV then either, but I remember its popularity.

JOHN CORBETT came from that show.
