86. OLIVER CROMWELL
Careful or indy will tell you why Cromwell was the sort of guy you'd want living next door to you.  :bouncegiggle:

Where I come from, when someone wants to say something is drastically awful, the term often is, ".....worse than the part of Hell where they've got Cromwell..."

I'd imagine he would be telling the demons off for not punishing him enough.

We agree about something...

I've gotten myself in trouble over there pointing out Cromwell was a better soldier than the Irish and that's why he was able to do so much holy warrior damage amid those green fields. For some reason that observation doesn't go down well.

Cromwell burned whole villages to the ground - including churches with families inside them.  He was a hateful bastard.

The stories of him doing that post-date his invasion of Ireland by a century.  There is no real contemporary evidence that he did so.
Cromwell became a convenient whipping boy for the Irish, since with the restoration of the monarchy he was an Englishman they were allowed and encouraged to hate. He did lay down a pretty good buttwhipping on them, but his tactics were no more or less brutal than the typical invading army of the time.

Wrong.  There is evidence in CROMWELL's own lifetime of him denying such charges that he blamed on out-of-control troops.  He hated Catholics and the Irish. "Whipping boy" after the English practice of waging their wars over the Irish sea so as to avoid damages to their own homeland?  There has been a lot of restoration of Cromwell's image since the 19th century, all politically motivated.  You also offer convenient contemporaneous excuses.

The best analysis I have read of Cromwell's Irish campaign was by an Irish historian.   I don't remember his name, but the title of the book was CROMWELL: THE HONORABLE ENEMY.  His point was that Cromwell's armies were no more nor less brutal than other 17th century armies, and that many of the atrocity stories were either exaggerated or completely fabricated, when analyzed in light of contemporary records and/or archeological evidences.

One example he sighted was a town, I believe called "Drougheda" or something like that (the book is in my library at work and I'm at home), in which Cromwell was alleged to have put to death every man over the age of ten in the town, and burned all of its buildings to the ground.  Yet there is a record of the city's council meeting in a guildhall a month after the alleged massacre, with all members in attendance.

That is not convincing.  Good remarks, but there remains evidence that Cromwell really did terrible things in Ireland.

Pick up the book if you get the chance.  It's a good read, and very well researched.

Unfortunately for me I just don't read anymore.  I have read some obscure sources regarding the history of the three kingdoms my family comes from.  I will challenge you to advise if you can find the surname of the executioner of CHARLES I.  I believe that ancestor is an ancestor on my father's side.  In any case, there is much difference of opinion on Cromwell.  And interest.

If I run across it, I will let you know.

Has anyone mentioned for #87

PETER KURTEN - the "Vampire of Dusseldorf" was a serial killer in Germany in the 1920's who killed young runaway boys, butchered them, and then served their meat to unwitting customers at his meat market.  He was executed by guillotine, as I recall.

And asked the executioner if his head would still be able to see the blood gushing from his neck hole before he died!
" It will be my greatest pleasure!"
My kinda guy!  :buggedout:

The guy who butchered boys and made meat pies from their dead bodies was another German serial killer from the same time period- not Peter Kurten.
