Though I can't find any info about it on the web, I recall the models from King Kong were found hidden under a very famous studio set....

Nope, it was from a lable on an audiotape Lucas was asked to hand a sound man. R2D2 stood for 'reel 2 dialague 2''. Lucas was working on star wars and was noting ideas he came across and since droids would have alphanumeric names he copied r2d2 down in a notebook.
