5. HOUSE (1977) Insane surreal Japanese ghost story.

Once again, my brain fails to work in this subgenre driven-style. However HAUSU is my #1 on almost any list.

When we did  favorite filmmakers some weeks back I thought about including Nobuhiko Obayashi. But in truth I've only seen two of his films. (They're hard to track down!) But I've seen HAUSU like 167 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time.

And incidentally BEETLEJUICE would be my #2.

In no order....

The Haunting
The Changeling
The Others
The Sixth Sense
The Shining
Paranormal Activity
Carnival of Souls
The Devil's Backbone
The Masque of the Red Death, animated, Spanish, done a few years ago.
(I canNOT think of this one's name but I'd say 1940s, British, the starring actress used the word "shan't" a lot, and her mom was the ghost named Camille. Hey, I was only about eight when I saw it but I never forgot it.)
What does not kill me makes me stranger.

^I believe the film in question is the UNINVITED (1944). The mother ghost was Carmel.

I believe you are right.

I saw that on a local station's afternoon movie in 1987 and it stayed in my mind.
What does not kill me makes me stranger.
