Updated version from older poll.

NOT 30 years in the making. 21st Century cult films obviously don't need that long. List is from wikipedia. Movies are ranked by popular vote (IMDb).

Part 1 of 4: How many have you seen?

hang on , the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time (AVATAR)  is a cult movie?! always thought the term meant films with some kind of non mainstream, underground, or in other words 'cult'  following. :)

Alex

Seen most of them, but I agree with Zombie that the vast majority of these are not what I'd consider cult movies.

Obviously it's subjective and hard to define, but I'd say some of the prerequisites of a 'cult movie' are that they did not have a big marketing campaign, were not made by a major studio/distributor, and did not feature a bunch of contemporary a-list actors

I'm with Zombie on this one. I don't consider any of these "cult" films.
Oh yeah- I seen 13.

Times have changed. Back in the day a potential cult film in the making went through lot of things, theater, home video, cable/TV until it found its audience after years or decades. These days streaming takes care of most of that.

John Carpenter's The Thing or The Shning weren't well received back in the day. Those are big studio releases with back then contemporary A-list actors. After some years  they became cult movies.

^ I diagree. the ROOM is a cult film. BIRDEMIC is a cult film.
All of these films were well received from day one.

AVATAR? I don't think so.

Gonna have to agree with the other members of the forum. I don't think the creator of this list is fully aware of what makes a cult film. INTERESTELLAR? BATMAN V SUPERMAN? Those are big budget flicks that are bound to be popular, regardless of how terrible they are (and I hated them both with a passion).

I agree AVATAR is in no way a cult film, but the definition of Cult Film has always been fluid. Danny Pearry's "Cult Film" book may have originated the concept, and he defined it through the audience's reaction to the film rather than whether it came from a major studio or was successful on release. He included CASABLANCA, KING KONG, and some other major films in his cult canon. According to Pearry, if it creates a passionate, devoted following--a cult--it is a cult movie, even if it's also a hit.

That said, AVATAR is in no way a cult film!
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

What does the Internet say about Avatar being a cult film? Found this:

Quote"It has a flat-out Green and anti-war message. It is predestined to launch a cult. It contains such visual detailing that it would reward repeating viewings. It invents a new language, Na'vi, as Lord of the Rings did, although mercifully I doubt this one can be spoken by humans, even teenage humans.18 Dec 2009

^That's what the internet said in 2009. Has it developed a cult following? If so, I'm unaware of it.
In fact, I have never met anyone, online or off, that even likes it.
