My question is how did they get past the captcha for posting PM's.  I know it can be done, but I've never actually seen it happen on a board.

First bit of widespread spam I can remember for this site.

Though not spam, we did have a seriously agressive troll hit the site almost two years (it was around Christmas 2004). I think some referred to them as the Ash Fanatic, as they seemed to have a fancy for Ash and brought close to 40, if not more, of his threads back to the top of the board by replying to them. They also started their own threads under several different names, then started replying to other threads under member's names claiming to be the troll; which caused just a little bit of confusion until it was realized that the originating IP was different than the actual members IP. And of course since Scott was having to deal with the troll himself, we took liberties in abusing the poor man ourselves while he had his hands full. 

The interesting thing about this spammer (may he rot in hell forever) is that his behavior was more of a troll than a spammer. I remember the user name having been in the new member entry several hours before it all started. Most spammers on forums hit and run, as they just want to hit as many forums as possible, and many of them use spambots. This troll took their time in order to do what they did, and to especially PM a good number, if not all, of the members of the board.

Well, that's enough about him. His kind is too busy anyway inbreeding among themselves.

I agree with Menard here. Not that it matters now but after thinking about it, this guy wasn't here just for spam to get us to go to any site...he had a purpose of causing problems...the lowly troll.
