Songs/Bands/Albums That Have Grown On You

Following up on Flick James's post regarding stuff you've played out, how about songs or bands that you didn't like at first but found yourself enjoying more over time. One song that comes to mind for me is Pearl Jam's Black.

I couldn't stand the song originally but after a lapse of time I heard it on the radio and found myself humming along.

I originally did not care much for Tool, but since then I've grown to appreciate them.

In general, however, I rarely experience this. I either like a song/band/album right away or I don't, and then it stands the test of time or it doesn't.

first time I heard beach boys 'pet sounds' I wondered what all the fuss was about. took quite a lot of listens for me to appreciate it as a work of genius which I now think it definitely is...

Talk Talk's Lauging Stock kinda stuch me as being weaker than Spirit Of Eden at first listen. It seemed not as memorable, but the more I listened to it, the more I realised it was an insanely great album that's probably better than SOE. It's definately a more mature album.

Creedance Clearwater Revival- never was a big fan at all, until recently. Guy at work plays all their stuff on a loop. Caught myself digging some of the songs.

The Clash - I didn't start to really appreciate them until a couple years ago, and it was actually a result of hearing Strummer's cover of "Redemption Song" So I went out and got "Streetcore", and then got into more Clash material - I kind of went about it backwards!

Good choice. The Clash is one of my own personal favorite bands.

Extreme and their Pornograffitti album. Only just really getting into it and realising it's as good as the first LP. Great riffs and clever lyrics. "He-Man Woman Hater" is awesome.

I used to really dislike Gun N Roses, but have recently found myself enjoying many of their releases. I think they used to scare me.

I absolutely hated the Georgia Satellite's "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" when it was released. Now, I quite like it. Same with The Oak Ridge Boys and "Elvira."

I still, however, despise Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart," and I don't see that ever changing.

I'm guilty of only listening to my fave songs on a particular album and avoiding listening to some of the less-than-obviously-great ones for some reason. It's very rare that I hear an album so good that I just want to listen to it in it's entirety. Case in point: Angel's Of Light's How I Loved You. I used to only listen to maybe three songs off the whole album and then put it aside. But now I find myself gravitating towards the songs I previously ignored.

A more obvious choice would be Radiohead's OK Computer. When I first heard it, I didn't get what all the hype was about, but the more I listened to it (especially while under the influence

) the more I "got" it - it's kinda like Dark Side Of The Moon for the 90s and it's an incredible record in it's own right. You all know what Radiohead sound like, so I won't bother posting a vid.

That was the one song that pretty much everyone in my house loved when I was a kid. Which needless to say was an oddity.

I used to hold a very hardline position that U2 didn't do anything good since The Joshua Tree, and thus I didn't listen to anything they did after that high-water-mark release. My wife, who is a U2 fan, has tempered me a bit, and I actually like a few things they did after that.

I love U2, but not everything that they've done. I always thoughtThe Joshua Tree was good, but I really don't think it's there best. I prefer their early stuff. I bought the October album, and on first listen it didn't do too much for me, but it definately grew on me and now it's my fave album of theirs. I also didn't like The Police's Regatta De Blanc when I first heard it, but it really grew on me after a few more listens.
