ER

Earth Song, by Michael Jackson. A heartfelt, haunting song; what can I say, it gets to me. I miss Michael Jackson. When he was in top form he had amazing range to his voice.

ER

Don't Dream It's Over, by Crowded House. Probably the most wistfully poignant pop song of all time.

ER

Tarantula, by The Smashing Pumpkins. Around 1999 the Pumpkins exploded under Billy's dictatorship, and what rose from the ashes in the early 2000s was a greatly inferior lineup, but still, that brief iteration did produce this jarring song.

ER

Beautiful Day, by U2. U2 was written off as has-beens around the turn of the century after spending most of the 1990s cranking out egotistical crap after Achtung, Baby, then came the album All That You Can't Leave Behind, and the world remembered how great this band could be. Power ballads don't come more cheerfully striking than this.

ER

Venus In Furs, by The Velvet Underground. New York, late '60s, music for people who stayed up all night, particularly while on drugs. Great song. Pagan. Dionysus would have made it his theme song if he hung out in lower Manhattan fifty-odd years ago.

ER

Personal Jesus, by Depeche Mode. I loved this song back in the day and still feel moved by it.

ER

Rammstein Du Hast. Who doesn't love a little Teutonic aggression now and again? (Besides Poles and French?)

ER

Criminal, by Fiona Apple. This song epitomizes a b***hy, late-90s Lilith Fair sound. "It's a sad, sad world, when a girl will break a boy, just because she can...." Fiona Apple destroyed her own career by being difficult, but she had a smoky-cool throaty voice and a sharp-hard delivery that is ear-catching.

Bridge by Queensryche.

If this song had come out a few years earlier, it would have really spoken to me. I do remember seeing them live and the crowd was ok, but not really getting into the gig until they played this one. It just seemed to resonate with so many people in the crowd. Which is a real shame.

Hail to thyself
For I am my own master
I am my own god
I require no shepherd
For I am no sheep.

ER

Heroes, by David Bowie. Someone asked Bowie why so many beautiful people die young, and Bowie answered: "When you are in a garden, what flowers do you pick first?"

I went to listen to this and there was an ad for some supplement that helps you poop, with colorful animated graphics of one's colon in action!
Even hitting skip, it still made it difficult for me to listen to the song without chuckling.
"I shall smite you in the nostrils with a rod of iron, and wax your spleen with Efferdent!!"

ER

Red Right Hand, by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I don't associate this song with Peaky Blinders, it makes me think of soldiers I knew, how this album was their anthem, played when they'd come back and get drunk after a mission. Great guys. Good friends, bad enemies. I love them all.

ER

The Girl From Ipanema, by Astrud Gilberto. A soft soothing coo of a song from the sultry beach culture of 1960s Brazil.  It feels like warm sand underfoot to listen.

Interesting nugget: the original was Astrud's first recording. She was not originally supposed to be on the record, but after listening to the first take Stan Getz and composer Joao Gilberto decided a female voice was needed. Joao suggested trying his wife, and the rest is history.
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...
