My father is extremely depressed this holiday season because my mother doesn't realize it's Christmas. She has gotten so she barely moves or communicates, just sits in a chair and stares at nothing all the time.

My father is extremely depressed this holiday season because my mother doesn't realize it's Christmas. She has gotten so she barely moves or communicates, just sits in a chair and stares at nothing all the time.

Sometimes old familiar smells can bring on a positive response in people suffering from conditions similar to what it sounds like your mother is going through. I don't know if you've attempted to reach her with scents that might hold deep meaning to her but it's said the smell/memory link is  one of the deepest in us all, and perhaps the last to depart. Anecdotally I've heard of these efforts bringing on what seems to be happiness in those who otherwise stir for little else.
I'm sorry for your family, and I hope there are better days to come for your mom.

Thanks, but she is in the final stages of Alzheimers. The moments of clarity she has are very modest, i.e. when she can put a couple of words together. My dad has finally given in and hired caretakers to come in for 6 hours a day, at least. The disease is horrible because of how SLOW it is.

Alzheimers is awful: Dad had it and was spared a lot of the agony as he passed away six months after being diagnosed.
