I wish the atomic bombs could have been demonstrated to the Japanese without the massive loss of life, but in the cruel math of war I'm satisfied the use of atomic weaponry saved a greater number of people than it killed.

War is never good but it can a lesser evil.

When I think of how the Allied powers prosecuted World War Two, it was waged in absolute terms, including the firebombing of cities, the use of A-bombs, the Soviet philosophy of free kill zones. We have never quite waged subsequent wars with quite the same intensity, our latter-day focus being on winning hearts and minds and trying to make ourselves liked.

Of the two strategies, World War Two was a complete victory, something I'm not sure any war fought since by a former Allied power has been.

A lesson in warfare lies in that.

Do you think it was morally just to drop the A-Bombs on Japan?
Those were civilians. I believe it was neccisary for the US to destroy the Axis, but not moral. Nothing in war (ie. murder) is ever moral.

I have  a personal stake in that question.  My Dad was being trained to take part in the invasion of Japan that fall.  He hadn't even turned 18 yet when the bombs were dropped. He was told that, in the second wave which he was to be a part of, the survival rate (getting through the campaign without being killed or wounded) would be one out of 132. Can you imagine being told that at 18?

Consensus was that the USA would lose somewhere between 150,000 and one million soldiers taking Japan, and that the Japanese death toll (military and civilian) would be between two and four million.
The bombs, combined, killed about 125,000 people.  If you were President, what would you do?
Grim arithmetic, but in the end, I think Truman made the right call.

^ I agree- fighting facism- the means justify the ends. But at what price?
My stepson Jim was in Iraq kicking in doors and would just shoot a room full of people.
Women and children. He told me this. He's dead now.
He died for goverments. Politics. Bulls**t. I get along with my neighbors- Why can't the rich? Power hungry war pigs.

Are you embarrassed to sing around other people?

I'm not, but I don't do it too much. My mom takes a lovely, unselfconscious joy in singing in random moments when she's doing things, which is pretty, but I can't say I do that.

Ash hated anyone singing around him, so of course we do it as much as possible.

I stopped singing in public when my voice broke at choir practice when I was eleven or twelve.

How do you think this site will end? Plus, do you think you'll leave it before it ends, or it will end while you're still here?

Most likely scenario, I think, is Andrew announces he won't be renewing the domain, giving us all plenty of time to say goodbye.

BUZZ! Ohhh, so close! I'm sorry, Alex, the correct answer was, 'In ice and dread. Yes, ice and dread.' But on the bright side you'll still be taking home a lovely new Tupperwear ice bucket!!!! Thanks for playing today!

Wonder how much registering the domain costs? A virgin in the volcano every year was my guess but turns out they probably want actual money.

Like the Rev says. Will I outlive it? I'm amazed I'm still alive today, with my heart problems, so no.

$15. Hosting costs more. My guess is with advertising Andrew makes just enough to break even.
