Slow paced horror movies

Whenever I think of slow paced horror movies, Raw Meat a.k.a. Death Line (1972) comes to mind.



Lingering shots, slow camera moves that take forever, long long dialogue scenes. It's all there in Raw Meat.

Some folks call slow pacing atmospheric, others call it boring. In this case, both atmospheric and boring applies to Raw Meat in my opinion.

Can you name good or bad slow paced horror movies?

Apollo 18 (2011)



Slow paced found footage horror. I'm aware that things move slow in space but it literally takes forever until something happens, and when something happens its usually a cheap short scare. Apollo 18 will certainly test your patience.

I actually liked that one.  I thought it had an authentic feel to it, more so than most found footage flicks.

I'm a fan of slow paced horror films that build suspense. The original of Ring certainly comes to mind, which is pretty much 90 minutes of building up to the finale. I also liked Apollo 18.

I really liked It Follows, although I can see that other people would call it the most boring movie ever.

LONG WEEKEND  (1978)

definition of a slow-burner, but there's claustrophobic intensity throughout...


POSSESSION  (1981)

didn't enjoy this one but it fits the bill


THE EXORCIST (1973)

one of the slowest moving films ever made

I'm with you on EXORCIST... find it highly overrated.

The trick w/ POSSESSION is to watch the shorter theatrical cut, not the complete director's cut.   The short version moves like Taco Bell through a drunk college kid's bowels. Never boring and it contains all the essential information from the director's cut, plus a few key shots (and some music) that are missing from the director's cut. God bless Zulawski, he made a perfect 80 minute movie, then he made it twice as long.

A "bad" example:
THE LODGE. Watched earlier this year. Feh. A long slow meandering trip to nowhere worthwhile or surprising, w/ an unlikeable central performance by Riley Keough and frequent reminders that you could be watching any number of better movies about ghosts or cults or wintertime horror.

A "good" example:
CASTLE OF BLOOD. Watched last night to kick off the Halloween season. I'll review it elsewhere. Takes a looooooong time to get up to speed (though not unpleasantly), and... pays off!

David Lynch absolutely makes methodically paced horror films. ERASERHEAD, LOST HIGHWAY, INLAND EMPIRE all qualify as well as MULHOLLAND. TWIN PEAKS is often horror and hey, it's 50+ hours long.

BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE (2014) was creepy as hell.
YELLOWBRICKROAD (2010) is slow and very scary as f**k.

David Lynch absolutely makes methodically paced horror films. ERASERHEAD, LOST HIGHWAY, INLAND EMPIRE all qualify as well as MULHOLLAND. TWIN PEAKS is often horror and hey, it's 50+ hours long.

yes true... being honest I didn't like INLAND EMPIRE, but one of my brothers who is borderline obsessed with Lynch thinks it's his best....

talking of MULHOLLAND DRIVE, Naomi Watts is also in CHILDREN OF THE CORN 4 (playing essentially the same character, weirdly) and that is a surprisingly watchable slow burn atmospheric horror , considering the 2 preceding sequels are both a bit unhinged/bonkers
