Quote from: RCMerchant on May 24, 2025, 08:37:10 AMI can't think of one Woody Allen movie I could sit through until the end.

I've seen a few, but not all. The ones that I enjoyed the most are

Husbands and Wives (1992)
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)
Is it October yet?

BANANAS and SLEEPER are the ones I'd recommend to Woody haters. But I get it. Don't know how unpopular the opinion is, lots of people hate Woody (even before the scandals).
I'll take you places the hand of man has not yet set foot...

I made it though Annie Hall and Manhattan, but was incredibly bored by them
Kubrick, Nolan, Tarantino, Wan, Iñárritu, Scorsese, Chaplin, Abrams, Wes Anderson, Gilliam, Kurosawa, Villeneuve - the elite

agreed x 1000... and it does seem to be hailed as a classic by many (most?)

Quote from: RCMerchant on May 22, 2025, 06:55:01 AMThe problem I had with the whole SCREAM thing is by the time it came out, the slasher franchise mess was just about played out. The 'masked killer' thing was old hat. It just seemed like kicking a dead horse.

well I think that's an unpopular opinion...the slasher scene had actually been fairly dormant since the late 80s and SCREAM is generally credited with revitalising the genre?

never liked the SCREAM movies myself though.

in fact my next unpopular opinion can be...

Wes Craven is the most overrated horror director ever.

I've never really liked Will Ferrell...,
Some people have said he has good timing, But I've always found his characters to be stiff & one note...

I respect the guy, but I can agree with that. I'd say his three best films were Nightmare 1, Scream 1 and New Nightmare. His other works I can take them or leave them

I'd say Elf is probably his best film. I like some others but I really need to like "be in the mood" otherwise he can be a bit grating.

The first NIGHTMARE was good, and the rest of his work is blah.

Wes Craven? Give me THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW, the original NIGHTMARE, and NEW NIGHTMARE. I hate LAST HOUSE. Haven't seen THE HILLS HAVE EYES. Agree there's a lot of blah stuff with premises that seem like they should work, but the movies never really deliver for me.

The Reverend and I claim a common unpopular opinion: LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT isn't all that. My regard for it has grown over the years from "utter disregard" to "mild appreciation for some of its peripheral qualities". Some of the dialogue is (unintentionally?) amusing (not the cops, though - they suck) and the songs, though wholly inappropriate, are a total hoot. As a horror movie or as exploitation or a gorefest, it's a wash-out - and the best-looking copy I've seen still looks like it was made by total amateurs w/ cheap broken equipment. It astounds me that a plurality of men made their careers on this piece of junk.

HILLS HAVE EYES terrified me as a child only on its reputation... when I finally saw it in my late 20s, it couldn't possibly live up, and it didn't/doesn't, but it's an improvement over LHOTL.

Craven made some interesting and good films, but he made a lot of mediocrity and some outright trash. DEADLY FRIEND is one of the stoopidest horror films ever made. Nice one, Wes.

zombie no.one

hmm well I do at least like LHOTL. it just has exploitation / grindhouse oozing out of every frame. but I have a sneaking suspicion Sean 'FRIDAY 13TH' Cunningham probably had had a bigger hand in how it turned out than is given credit for

other than that I can't think of any Wes Craven film that does anything for me in the way that was intended. I respect ELM ST for what it is but I don't actually enjoy it... HILLS HAVE EYES is a random screamy shouty fest ... although Part 2 is so bad it's good, I watch that sometimes
