Peter Paul & Mary's version of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain," released a year before Gordon did. I didn't know this existed until today (I believe it was a bigger hit at the time than Lightfoot's rendition, though). Doesn't work as well for me---the song requires a single singer---but the guitar is good.

The last decade with mostly good music.
The Black Parade, by My Chemical Romance. I had never known of this band til I heard this song in the 2000s, and instantly was swept into their orbit. Great video, great song. Very dark, crazed. Not for the faint of spirit.

Different Trains, by Steve Reich An experimental piece that tells the story of Jewish clan's escape from pre-WWII Europe, interwoven into the sounds of trains recorded in the 1960s, spliced into the spoken words in the 1980s, released in the 2000s. Reich just turned eighty-five recently, still alive, so smoke that, Hitler.

Does He Love You, by Rilo Kiley. A song that reminds me of a time in 2004 when two different men had strong feelings for me. The pretty boy I married, the other, who is a f**king hard core type under his exterior of stoical calm, I still talk to but probably shouldn't. This song's merry go round music is both deceptive and apt for how I sometimes felt then, like the world was spinning. My cousin still calls this "your polyandrous song" when it comes on, which I just reaaaaalllly appreciate, lol.

Tarantula, by The Smashing Pumpkins. Around 1999 the Pumpkins exploded under Billy's dictatorship, and what rose from the ashes in the early 2000s was a greatly inferior lineup, but still, that brief iteration did produce this jarring song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro8shNTlzTY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ro8shNTlzTY)
Beautiful Day, by U2. U2 was written off as has-beens around the turn of the century after spending most of the 1990s cranking out egotistical crap after Achtung, Baby, then came the album All That You Can't Leave Behind, and the world remembered how great this band could be. Power ballads don't come more cheerfully striking than this.

Criminal, by Fiona Apple. This song epitomizes a b***hy, late-90s Lilith Fair sound. "It's a sad, sad world, when a girl will break a boy, just because she can...." Fiona Apple destroyed her own career by being difficult, but she had a smoky-cool throaty voice and a sharp-hard delivery that is ear-catching.

Red Right Hand, by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. I don't associate this song with Peaky Blinders, it makes me think of soldiers I knew, how this album was their anthem, played when they'd come back and get drunk after a mission. Great guys. Good friends, bad enemies. I love them all.

Interesting nugget: the original was Astrud's first recording. She was not originally supposed to be on the record, but after listening to the first take Stan Getz and composer Joao Gilberto decided a female voice was needed. Joao suggested trying his wife, and the rest is history.

Santeria, by Sublime. Brad Newell overdosed just before this video was shot. He knew his drug use was a terminal disease and always told his friends not to be sad when he went, just celebrate the good times, so when he died the band got together and made this goofy video instead of a sad one.

How's It Gonna Be, by Third-Eye Blind. Around the turn of the century I knew a man who loved this song, and he told me it was about a selfish man realizing he's ruined his perfect relationship, and for maybe the only time in his life he stops to think beyond himself to wonder how it's gonna be "when you don't know me anymore" and just what's coming when the end arrives, since he's royally mangled what he and the unnamed woman once shared.

Buddy Holly, by Weezer. A good song and a Forrest-Gump-ish video that blew all our minds in 1994. Really, people squealed when this video came on, and chins hit chests. Incidentally, the singer quit the band for a while to go to Harvard!

Dancing Barefoot, covered by U2. I remember where I was when I first heard this, it was in the late '80s, I was in a car with my mom crossing the Ohio River on the "Big Mac Bridge" and I got chills, like I would with only one other song when I first heard it, that being The End, by The Doors. (It was years before I realized Patti Smith wrote Dancing Barefoot.)
