I think we needed one of these.

I was thinking today, a few weeks ago it was kicked around somewhere in here how the brain stays conscious after "death" and someone said people have even been able to hear what others are saying about them.

Well, imagine if that's true and how that'd make hanging suck even more. You're dangling there bodily dead but thinking man I effed up. Or maybe worse, you're executed by hanging and there you swing while a crowd stares and jailors gloat and some photographer takes your picture, and all you can do is rotate there passively.

Note to self: hanging is off the table.
What does not kill me makes me stranger.

With hanging, I believe your spinal cord would be severed, so you wouldn't even feel the rest of your body while you hung there I guess?

I remember some years ago reading an article that decided (to the author's satisfaction anyway), that the only way to humanely and painlessly execute someone was to chain them to a cliff and then take them out with a missile strike. I do agree it would be a fast way to die, but pretty stressful leading up to that point.

By a vaguely connected coincidence, I did hear a line in a tv show that made me chuckle where a psychic (who could foresee how someone would die) turned around to one of the main characters and said something along the lines of "There are worse ways to go, but I can't think of one less dignified than auto-erotic asphyxiation."

I had a horrible dream about a month ago: I was coming down some stairs in the dark, switched the light on and someone I knew was hanging by his neck, still alive, still talking and refusing all help, especially from me.  :buggedout:

To dust, I guess, forgotten and absorbed to the Earth below...

It just seems to me no matter how hard I work, no matter how much I hustle my books, no matter how many river tours I book, we never get ahead financially.  I lie awake at night and think that I am going to die poor, unable to pay for basic necessities once I'm no longer able to push myself 6-7 days a week.

Those are dark thoughts indeed, Indy, but in ways that matter most, like the love and regard of others, you are one of the richest people out there. If ever you did reach such a dire scenario, people who know you from school, church, online, offline, every aspect of your life would step up and look out for you the way you've looked out for the countless souls you've inspired for decades by being who you are. I believe that. The rush to your door would make the crowd coming to George Bailey's aid look like chicken feed.

I agree with ER that you are a rich man, Indy.  You love the love of your life and have a family together.  Your words regarding money worries are not unique, or even unusual.  Money is the only thing God did not create.  You are blessed.

After watching my mother's decline I have a strong and somewhat reasonable fear of acquiring dementia myself. I don't have a family to take care of me in my dotage like she does. So I often wonder if it wouldn't be better for me if I die relatively young.

There's an old Irish toast, Rev: "May you never die before the day of your death."

In other words it is possible to die and still be living, and no one wants that. That's kind of my philosophy; live for as long as your life lasts, and no longer.

Good luck.
