and what americans seem to call 'chips', we in the uk call 'crisps'

...but what does 'crisps' mean, to americans? (if anything?)

Usually puffed rice used in childrens' cereals.....

"Crisps" is not a word Americans use for any food item. Lil' Cerbs answer is closest, but if you asked an average American if they wanted "crisps" they'd have no idea what you meant.

There's also the difference between "cookies" and "biscuits," which are basically the reverse of the UK.

yep, 'candy' and 'sweets' being another...

there are occasional exceptions. 'popping candy' is known by that name here... and 'candy floss'...can't think of any other examples.

to be fair I rarely drink tea and neither does anyone I know. coffee seems to be the standard hot drink now.

what I can't get my head round is how many people here drink black coffee now. swear it used to be rare, now it's becoming the norm... I can't deal with black coffee at all

Just to complicate things a bit further, tea is used in some parts of the country to refer to your evening meal.
