It'll happen at least once in our lifetime when we hear music that is so bleak in atmosphere, so depressing that it makes you doubt your life or so frightening that just hearing the first few notes makes you uneasy.

I've crossed paths with music like this many times.

If I had to pick a song that invokes depressing feelings and distressing images in my mind, it would have to be Moevot's "Ehepr Abzvoryaerv" (aka Chante D'Eternite II).

When I first heard this song, I felt as if I had just fallen into the depths hell, and the gates shut before me as I tried to escape. As the vocals start to echo, I pictured in my mind myself calling out to others in vain hope of seeking help. When the song ends, I couldn't help but feel like I was trapped forever in this gloomy darkness. I know that this is all sounds silly and overly melodramatic (it really is when looking back), but these are the visions and feelings that the song invoked in my mind.

Did you ever listen to something that affected you similarily?

i think you guys and gals would wish i'd shut up about my swans fanboy-isms, but i've never encountered a band who, when they were on, were as soul crushingly depressing EVER.

michael's scream near the end is the sound of ultimate despair.

also, mick harris's lull project is a fine example of pitch black ambient/isolationist dronescapes.

J.G. Thirlwell is probably my favorite crazy musician. He was doing genre-busting "industrial" music way before it became an actual genre. Right now, he's probably best known for being the scorer for "The Venture Bros."

Anyway, this little number called "English Faggot" is probably one of the most legitimately homicidal pieces of music I have ever heard. The slow build of anger sounds like he is one step away from chopping up a family with an ax. It's dark.

By the way, this isn't an example of homophobia (although it uses that); just more of an example of pure raw hatred. Compare it to this track by Dog Fashion Disco:

Seems almost tame in comparison.

Every dead body that is not exterminated becomes one of them. It gets up and kills. The people it kills, get up and kill.
